As a neutral observer of this complex family dynamic, it is evident that the Brown family, particularly Kody, is grappling with deep-seated issues of authority, accountability, and emotional safety. From an outsider’s perspective, it seems like they are struggling to find harmony amidst their plural marriage arrangement.
Another baby is being added into the Sister Wives family.
In a recent episode of ‘Sister Wives’, Madison Brush, the 28-year-old daughter of former partners Janelle Brown and Kody Brown, shared the news of her upcoming fourth baby.
2021 has been quite the rollercoaster! It seems like 2025 could also be an exciting, perhaps chaotic year, as Maddie announced in her Sept. 29 Instagram post that she is expecting Baby Brush #4, due March 2025.
Grandma Janelle reposted Maddie’s news on her own Instagram Story, writing, “Pretty dang excited.”
Maddie and her spouse, Caleb Brush, are currently blessed with a son named Axel Brush, who is 7 years old, as well as two daughters – Evie Brush, aged 5, and Josephine Brush, only 19 months.
The announcement about Maddie’s pregnancy arrives at a challenging period for her and her father Kody, who are estranged. On the latest season of their TLC show, their relationship has been frequently addressed following Janelle’s separation from Kody in 2022.
In the September 22 episode, Kody admitted that he didn’t actively end contact with Madison; instead, she stopped communicating with him. He explained that whenever they spoke, it seemed like she was just fishing for gossip, which became tiresome for him.
Nevertheless, Janelle perceived the situation in a contrasting light, expressing that “Kody actually stopped contacting Caleb and Maddie as the family began to fall apart significantly, and the children are largely unaware of him. He hasn’t made any visits, and he doesn’t call.
Janelle mentioned that her daughter feels no requirement for her grandchildren to maintain a bond with their paternal grandparent, due to their current strained family situation.
Janelle remarked that Maddie is exceptionally protective, almost overly so. She believes it’s best for them if she keeps their relationship with him hidden until he can be reliable, consistent, and avoid unnecessary drama.
Over the past few years, Kody’s bonds with his grown children have experienced tension after his separations from Janelle, Christine Brown, and Meri Brown. Now, the former polygamist is left with just one wife, Robyn Brown, who expressed her encouragement for Kody to work on rebuilding his connections with his kids.
Robyn stated in the episode, ‘I’ve motivated Kody to try and resolve any relationship issues he can with his children.’ However, it seems like it’s not just one-sided; after all, Maddie hasn’t been making an effort to connect with her father either.

Kody Brown expressed his readiness to separate from his first wife, Meri Brown, not long after they exchanged vows in 1990. However, as he told her, “When we move to Flagstaff, this will be a good time for us to start anew,” Meri recalled during the September 15 premiere, alluding to their 2018 relocation. “He had led me to believe these things in the past. This is something he has been doing for a long time.
She expressed her primary concern as his poor communication, including his true feelings, desires, and dislikes, along with the narrative he’s been sharing throughout the years.
Kody admitted there might have been some confusing signals, but as he delved into the tasks at hand, he found himself questioning, “What’s the point of doing this?” he clarified, stating that he wouldn’t pursue a relationship with her at present.
Either way, Meri’s friends were thrilled when she finally pulled the plug in early 2023.
She admitted, “They told me something like, ‘We’re here for you, we’ve got your back. And it’s high time,'” she confessed. With her blinders removed, she now believes that he had been subtly encouraging her to leave him for years by asserting he didn’t love her, “Since if I could be pushed out and depart, then he wouldn’t appear as the villain because he didn’t walk away.
Several years had passed since the family bought a 14-acre piece of land they intended to construct on, located in Flagstaff, Arizona. In the first episode of the new season, Kody admitted he was ready to let go of their building dream because they hadn’t yet paid off the full $820,000 cost (which reports suggest they settled in 2023). Speaking to his remaining wife, Robyn Brown, Kody expressed a preference for either abandoning the project or selling it and starting anew somewhere else.
As for Robyn, “I can’t talk about that,” she responded. “That is so not where I’m at.”
Initially, Janelle Brown shared with TopMob News that they were gradually drifting apart. However, it was primarily Kody’s shortcomings as a parent towards some of their children that led to her decision to depart.
The mom shared with Logan Brown, Madison Brown Brush, Hunter Brown, Garrison Brown, Gabriel Brown, and Savanah Brown that the turning point for her was when his relationship with our children deteriorated and he didn’t appear to be making a significant effort to mend it. She added, “That realization made me understand what was truly keeping me here.
The reason Kody didn’t put in more effort to repair the strained relationships with some of his grown-up kids, was what he shared as an explanation.
In the recent episode on the 15th of September, I found myself expressing my discomfort, stating, “I no longer seem to belong in our family unit.” Despite the fact that I’m still legally married to Robyn and we’re parenting our beautiful brood – Dayton Brown, Aurora Brown, Breanna Brown, Solomon Brown, and Ariella Brown – it feels more like a passing acquaintance with some of the other children. Our interactions are rare, leaving me wondering, “What’s my place here? This isn’t feeling like family anymore.
Even though they’ve finally embarked on a monogamous journey after 14 years together, Robyn admitted in the season premiere that their marriage is currently facing its most challenging period. “Things have been difficult between us,” she explained. “Kody isn’t sure who to hold accountable, himself or one of the other wives. He feels a lot of rejection and I believe he’s worried I might reject him too.
Consequently, she disclosed, “I’m constantly vigilant. I have to frequently ensure he isn’t undermining our relationship.” The most challenging aspect, she concluded: “There are no guides for the notion that I’m still wedded to a man who is going through multiple divorces.
Meanwhile, Kody was grappling with a lack of self-assurance, expressing, “I find it hard to gaze into the mirror and tell myself, ‘Hi there, pal. I adore you.’
Include Madison, Janelle’s oldest child, in the list of kids who aren’t currently in a relationship with Kody. As Janelle shared during the debut, Maddie hasn’t talked to her father and neither has he contacted her. There are no calls exchanged, no contact initiated by either side, and they don’t have any kind of relationship at the moment. Essentially, she’s distanced herself from both Kody and Robin.
Janelle pointed out that Kody’s relationship with Maddie’s children, Axel, Evangalynn, and Josephine, seems casual. She stated that Kody would only be allowed more contact if he could fully commit to it.
Consequently, during the September 22 episode, Janelle stated that Kody had essentially stopped communicating with Maddie and her husband Caleb Brush when the family began to disintegrate significantly.
Without Kody being present or reaching out, Maddie has taken on a very protective role, as Janelle put it. She feels that it’s best for their situation if they keep Kody at arm’s length until he can be more reliable and less dramatic, avoiding any unnecessary involvement with him.
Meanwhile, Robyn mentioned that she’s been urging Kody to make amends, she added, “I believe it would be beneficial if the children also took steps towards reconciliation as well.
Currently, Kody appears unwilling to bridge the gap, complaining that whenever he talks to his daughter, their conversations feel more like fishing for gossip, which has grown tiring for him.
During their 32nd anniversary celebration, Meri confided in her friend Brandi on the September 15th episode that “He hinted he never truly loved me and felt obligated to marry me,” she expressed. In response, Meri told him, “‘Kody,’ I said, ‘I know you cared for me.’
And if he didn’t, she said in a confessional, why did he ever choose to propose?
She pondered, “Why would a solitary young man decide to marry a solitary young woman if he didn’t feel love for her initially? Isn’t it harsh to select someone from a group and then declare, ‘I choose you, with the intention of trying to manufacture love over the next 32 years’?
In his personal reflection, Kody stated, “Meri is making some claims against me. Well, let her say what she will. I won’t be responding to them.
Despite being uncertain whether to develop Coyote Pass or just sell it, Janelle realized the first step was settling the Arizona property debt. Since Kody refused to discuss the matter with her, she admitted to ex-sister wife Christine Brown in the September 22 episode that “It seems I’ll have to hire a lawyer.” She added, “I believe that’s the only way I can get any kind of resolution out of him.
In my expert opinion, it’s crucial to emphasize that, despite our long-term relationship, we don’t share a legally recognized marriage bond with Kody. Consequently, I have no legitimate claims on his property, should the need arise. It’s not as simple as picking up the phone and scheduling a divorce; it’s much more intricate due to the absence of a legal union between us.
Kody’s reason for avoiding discussions with Janelle regarding the Arizona property is due to his lack of trust in her now.
He firmly declared during the September 22 episode that we’ll settle the property when necessary, and he won’t share any specifics about his actions or plans because he’s exhausted from revealing details that get twisted in the rumor mill of our fractured family.
A bit of a pot calling the kettle black, Janelle said in her own interview.
I can’t help but spill secrets, it seems! I confided in him about the details of my past relationships and even mentioned my ex-wives, and he just couldn’t resist sharing those tidbits with me. I find myself questioning if it’s appropriate information to exchange.
In days when their bond grew stronger instead of weaker, they would combine their savings in a single shared fund.
In my expertise, I’ve found that in times past, we would pool our resources to help one individual, and then collectively rally to support another. This has been the norm for quite some time, until roughly the last decade. However, it seems nowadays, the focus has shifted towards personal estates, with everyone seemingly striving for their own.
Back in August, when Robyn found herself seeking a new abode in Arizona, I, along with fellow dedicated fans, pooled our resources to secure her a stunning $1.65 million five-bedroom property. It was truly a labor of love!
Initially, Robyn mentioned that the property would benefit the entire family. However, when Janelle proposed that they all be co-signers on the mortgage, her idea was turned down. Kody argued, “We need to safeguard, you understand, protect Robyn’s estate,” as Janelle later remembered. Now that she is leaving the family, Janelle expressed her desire to receive her share of the Coyote Pass earnings and also recover some of the money she invested in Robyn’s house.
But that could be a tough sell.
In Robyn’s words, she expressed, “After working side by side for such a long time, it seems puzzling to me when Janelle mentions she’s owed money. I can’t help but wonder, ‘How is this calculated? How does one arrive at that figure?’ It’s all so perplexing.
Janelle expressed her frustration as she pointed out that despite their struggles with Coyote Pass payments, Kody seemed to acquire other possessions such as trailers and home decor. She noted the artwork on Robyn and Kody’s walls and mentioned that she, too, has made purchases. In response, Kody explained that a significant portion of his funds were invested in vehicles, “essentially building a fleet,” and insurance for their children.
Janelle admitted she didn’t know the details of Kody and Robyn’s financial management, but she often found herself amazed by how well-maintained Robyn’s backyard was, always finished to perfection. There were also plenty of items at her house that left Janelle in awe, prompting her to exclaim, “Wow. Huh.
Essentially, she pointed out that he rarely puts her needs or wants first, which over time became a problem for her. In fact, she admitted that both she and her grown children had become increasingly frustrated with this situation, expressing exasperation like, “What’s going on here, Mom?
Instead, we could say that Robyn became meticulous about managing her finances following the breakdown of her initial marriage.
She openly admitted during the September 22 episode that she wasn’t very good with finances in the past. She experienced tough times when she was younger and it was her divorce that taught her how to manage her money effectively and carefully. As for her fellow sister wives, she mentioned that they likely prioritized their spending differently than she did.
Currently, Janelle admitted during the September 22 episode that she and Christine rarely interact with Meri, Robyn, or Kody, and she doesn’t expect this situation to improve significantly in the near future.
Speaking about the period when they lived in four homes on a single cul-de-sac in Las Vegas, Kody referred to it as “the best phase of my existence”. He added, “Everything was running smoothly, and having Maddie and Caleb around made it even better. I truly cherished Caleb; he felt like family.
In the heart of Arizona, I found myself navigating a challenging landscape as differing perspectives on COVID-19 safety measures collided. As if that wasn’t enough, my personal life took an unexpected turn, and the dissolution of my marriages left a bitter taste. I couldn’t help but notice how this turmoil trickled down to my relationships with my children, causing them to sour as well. It was a painful reminder of how deeply interconnected our lives can be.
But Christine insisted their were issues well before she announced she was leaving in late 2021.
She mentioned during the September 22 broadcast, “The children who felt frustrated were already in that state long before I departed.” She explained that her departure did not alter the dynamic between the father and his kids. Essentially, Kody has the ability to mend his relationships with his children.
Though it’ll definitely take some work.
Kody shared, “I’ve been deeply hurt by how I’ve been treated, and it’s left me unable to move past it yet. I can’t accept responsibility for actions my wife or ex-wife claim I took part in. I can only hope that one day the resentment will fade, allowing us to find forgiveness and love once more.
At the ages of 21 and 19, Kody admitted that he and Meri weren’t particularly well acquainted when they got married spiritually and legally. Later on, in 2014, they officially divorced so that Kody could legally adopt Robyn’s three oldest children from a previous relationship.
During our marriage, she appeared quite different from what I had expected, and I believe there were certain issues or feelings (often referred to as baggage) that Meri carried which I wasn’t aware of. Initially, I thought I could tolerate it, but later realized that everything seemed to turn into an argument. To put it bluntly, I can no longer endure a life where she is consistently upset with me.
Despite his desire to depart, he couldn’t manage to do so. Kody explained that a man in plural marriage can’t seek a divorce if they wish to remain faithful and devoted. Consequently, he found himself trapped within that relationship. Yet, he didn’t necessarily yearn for an exit; instead, he sought understanding of whether it was possible to mend and salvage the bond.
Therefore, due to the conflicting signals, he conceded that Meri believed they could resolve their issues. However, whenever they were in each other’s company, Kody explained, “She wasn’t pleasant, she wasn’t entertaining, she wasn’t compassionate, she wasn’t engaging. I’m trying to maintain my curiosity towards her, but I’m growing tired instead.
He acknowledged that it was understandable for Meri to feel deserted, yet he clarified, “However, I wasn’t the one who asked them to leave. Instead, it was Christine, Janelle, and Meri themselves who decided for me to depart from our shared home.
Despite the fact that Janelle and Christine perceived no necessity to formally divorce Kody due to their unofficial marital status, Meri intended to petition their religious institution for an official separation, referred to as a “release.
She clarified in the September 22 episode that all four of us had been united with Kody through our church in a covenant, rather than legally married. However, as we’re not progressing towards any legal marriage, it seems appropriate to end this covenant. I don’t wish to be bound to him for eternity if he doesn’t desire me, and at this point, I feel we should completely part ways.
Kody was hesitant about the idea, she explained, as she didn’t feel comfortable submitting to the leadership of the church authorities.
Kody stated plainly that the harm was so severe that reconciliation is no longer an option for him. He further expressed his discontent with the church, finding its rules burdensome, hence he wishes to give Meri her freedom to pursue what she wants. If he remains angry at her, it leads to constant fighting, which he wants to avoid. So, in essence, he wants Meri to move on and leave their ongoing issues behind because they have lingered for far too long.
2021’s holiday gift exchange conversation took an unpleasant turn for the 18 Brown children. As Christine explained, “Things fell apart, things went wrong.” The group consisted of Kody, Robyn, and their kids on one side, who showed no interest in Janelle, me, or our kids. This text exchange led to a division within the group post-discussion.
In Robyn’s perspective, her three eldest children perceived the encounter as “uncomfortable emotionally” and decided it would be best for them to distance themselves from the relationship temporarily. However, she clarified that they didn’t mean to cut ties completely or avoid further interaction, stating instead that it was more about expressing, “Oops, this got a bit messy.
Aurora asserted that she had been informed on numerous occasions, by various individuals, that she was not welcomed into the family when her mother married Kody in 2010. She claimed they never acknowledged or regarded her as their sister.
Her sister Breanna expressed that the parents might have made more effort to bring our family closer together, but unfortunately, this connection was never fully established.
But Christine isn’t sure how they could have opened their arms any wider.
Robyn’s children and Robyn are always welcome to join any event,” she emphasized. “In other words, they can feel free to drop by our home whenever it suits them.
At the same time, she mentioned, her daughter Ysabel Brown shared a strong bond with Robyn’s children. In fact, Mykelti Brown Padron resided with them for a period. She explained, “There were challenging times and my children felt annoyed at times, but they viewed Robyn’s kids as their siblings just as if they were blood relatives.
Speaking enthusiastically about the freedom it offers, Janelle expressed her view on plural marriage as follows: “When it works well, you become an integral part of this fantastic family network. You have a strong bond with your spouse and enjoy all the benefits that come with it. Yet, at the same time, you retain your independence – making plural marriage, in my opinion, a truly wonderful setup.
