Sisu 2: The Action Sequel Fans Have Been Waiting for Is Coming Soon

The production company Screen Gems from Sony Pictures has officially given the go-ahead for Sisu 2, signifying the comeback of one of today’s most ruthless and effective anti-heroes in modern action cinema. The original film, Sisu, captivated viewers with its stark visuals, sparse dialogue, and intensely violent action scenes set against World War II, earning both critical acclaim and a cult following. Now, the sequel to the 2022 Finnish action-thriller is in development, welcoming back original writer and director Jalmari Helander as well as star Jorma Tommila, who reprises his memorable role as Aatami Korpi. Moreover, genre veterans Richard Brake and Stephen Lang have joined the cast, promising more intense confrontations. The announcement also indicates a quick resurgence for the franchise, with the sequel set to premiere in cinemas later this year.

In December of 1944, during the final, grim stages of World War II, the movie titled Sisu took viewers on a journey into the harsh Lapland wilderness. The main character is Aatami Korpi (Tommila), a previous Finnish commando now living as a lone gold prospector. During the Winter War, he was famously known by the Red Army as “Koschei” or “The Immortal”, due to his tragic loss of family. Aatami is renowned for his extraordinary resilience. However, his peaceful solitude is disrupted when he unearths a substantial gold deposit, eventually encountering a ruthless German SS platoon led by Bruno Helldorf (Aksel Hennie), a cunning officer. These Nazis, fleeing towards Norway to evade justice following Germany’s impending defeat, view Aatami’s gold as their means of escape.

In the movie titled Sisu, the Nazis try to grab the treasure, mistakenly underestimating the resourceful old prospector. What follows is a tireless and incredibly inventive sequence of brutal encounters, as Aatami symbolizes the Finnish idea of “sisu” — an indomitable spirit in the face of impossible odds — by stubbornly holding onto his gold and his life. This film became a remarkable success, garnering a 94% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and winning Best Film, Best Actor for Tommila, and other awards at the Sitges Film Festival. Made with a budget of only $6.5 million, Sisu attracted a substantial audience due to positive word-of-mouth and impressive streaming performance, demonstrating its popularity with its tight, impactful style. Rumors indicate that the sequel will have a budget significantly larger than the original, hinting that Helander plans to offer an even grander spectacle.

Why Sisu‘s Brutal Simplicity and Silent Fury Struck Gold

In a unique and raw manner, the film Sisu provided a distinct, intense gratification stemming from its distinctive narrative style. As it chronicles a solitary character, dialogues are minimal. Instead, Tommila’s resilient prospector brutally battles hordes of Nazis in silence, emphasizing the brutal intensity of each scene. This commitment to visual storytelling enables viewers to establish a profound, emotional bond with Aatami, comprehending his reasons and remarkable tenacity through his actions rather than explanations. Moreover, Tommila’s powerful presence and eloquent silence dominate the screen. Each visible scar, unyielding gaze, and agonized expression during self-surgery speaks volumes about a long history of hardship and an indomitable spirit that cannot be broken.

In simpler terms, while it’s natural to draw parallels between Sisu and intense movies like John Wick or Rambo due to their action-packed nature and lone hero themes, Sisu carves out its unique niche through its historical backdrop, raw realism, and the deep silence of its protagonist. It deftly combined aspects of war films, western revenge stories, and pure action into a compact, potent whole. With a larger budget for Sisu 2, Helander now has the means to create another action masterpiece, as Aatami faces off against Brake and Lang.

Sisu 2 is scheduled for release on November 21st.
