The production company Screen Gems from Sony Pictures has officially given the go-ahead for Sisu 2, signifying the comeback of one of today’s most ruthless and effective anti-heroes in modern action cinema. The original film, Sisu, captivated viewers with its stark visuals, sparse dialogue, and intensely violent action scenes set against World War II, earning both critical acclaim and a cult following. Now, the sequel to the 2022 Finnish action-thriller is in development, welcoming back original writer and director Jalmari Helander as well as star Jorma Tommila, who reprises his memorable role as Aatami Korpi. In the movie titled Sisu, the Nazis try to grab the treasure, mistakenly underestimating the resourceful old prospector. What follows is a tireless and incredibly inventive sequence of brutal encounters, as Aatami symbolizes the Finnish idea of “sisu” — an indomitable spirit in the face of impossible odds — by stubbornly holding onto his gold and his life. This film became a remarkable success, garnering a 94% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and winning Best Film, Best Actor for Tommila, and other awards at the Sitges Film Festival. Made with a budget of only $6.5 million, Sisu attracted a substantial audience due to positive word-of-mouth and impressive streaming performance, demonstrating its popularity with its tight, impactful style. Rumors indicate that the sequel will have a budget significantly larger than the original, hinting that Helander plans to offer an even grander spectacle.
