If you’re a fan of the MonsterVerse, make sure to visit your local comic book stores! The continuation of the Netflix series “Skull Island” will carry on in printed format. Since the release of 2014’s “Godzilla,” Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse has been a successful and popular shared universe in movies, with hits like “Godzilla vs. Kong” and its sequel, “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.” The franchise has also ventured into television, debuting two shows in 2023: Apple TV’s live-action series “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” and the animated series “Skull Island” on Netflix.
Titan Comics is set to release “Return to Skull Island,” a comic book sequel inspired by the Netflix animated series “Skull Island.” This animated show was set in the 1990s, following the events of “Kong: Skull Island” but preceding the hinted-at events from the season finale of “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,” which featured a Kong cameo. The comic series will be penned by Simon Furman and illustrated by Christopher Jones, with its release scheduled for June 18, 2025. Check out the trailer below to get a sneak peek:

The Growling Appeal of the MonsterVerse
In June 2023, Netflix debuted the series “Skull Island.” This show follows a band of castaways stranded on the legendary Skull Island. Critics have praised the series, but as of now, Netflix hasn’t announced plans for a second season despite Brian Duffield, the creator, stating that the scripts are prepared. Interestingly, news about “Skull Island” was first broken in January 2021, marking a significant twist in the MonsterVerse franchise. After the underperformance of “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” it seemed as though the long-awaited “Godzilla vs. Kong” would be the last film in the MonsterVerse, with “Skull Island” appearing to be an addendum.
Despite initial doubts due to its release during theater reopenings post-COVID-19 pandemic, the movie Godzilla vs. Kong became an unexpected success at both box offices and streaming platforms. This achievement has further boosted the popularity of the MonsterVerse, with Monarch: Legacy of Monsters receiving positive feedback upon its November 2023 release and a second season scheduled. Additionally, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire surpassed expectations at the box office, ensuring a third film in 2027.
Regardless if Skull Island doesn’t come back for Season 2, the fact that it has a comic continuation, titled Return to Skull Island, is still beneficial for the broader MonsterVerse brand. Many well-known series, such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Smallville, have had comic sequels, and now Skull Island can be counted among them. This expansion of the MonsterVerse into films, TV shows, and comics is generating a new fanbase for classic monsters like King Kong and Godzilla.
