Although Oblivion and Fallout 3 have been receiving much attention lately, it seems that The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind has been somewhat overlooked despite the significant fan base it has cultivated since its debut in 2002. Many consider Morrowind to be the finest game in the series due to its unique and intricate world-building, groundbreaking mechanics, and complexity that appears to have diminished in more recent titles. Fortunately, the Morrowind community has not abandoned it even twenty-three years after its initial launch.
Due to its enduring popularity among fans, multiple mod creators continue to develop the game even though it’s quite old. However, these projects don’t attract as much attention as those that aim to transfer Morrowind into other games, such as Skyrim. For a while now, Skyrim has been a favorite for modders, with numerous impressive projects like Enderal: Forgotten Stories and the vast Beyond Skyrim series, which will eventually transport the Dragonborn to contemporary Morrowind. Nevertheless, one project is generating anticipation in preparation for Bethesda’s remastering phase: Skywind.
Skywind Got A Promising Update From Its Modding Team
The Project’s End Point Is Finally In Sight
Skywind aims to reimagine the entirety of Morrowind utilizing Skyrim’s engine, thereby modernizing and making it more appealing to today’s gamers. Notably, a captivating 20-minute gameplay demo has been shared on YouTube by the TESR Skywind channel, showcasing Morrowind in an unprecedentedly stunning light. As per the video, all 2D art and writing have been finished for the game, with nearly all Non-Player Characters (NPCs) already cast. The project is progressing well, a positive indication given that many modding projects of this scale frequently encounter cancellation due to their immense size and the fact that they are often undertaken by volunteer teams.
Despite facing some challenges, Skywind appears to have effectively avoided them for the most part, as evidenced by the gameplay demo. This project doesn’t seem like it will turn out to be just a fantasy, though an official release date hasn’t been announced yet. It looks promising that Skywind may be closer to launch than Bethesda’s reportedly upcoming remaster of Fallout 3, which might otherwise overshadow other projects from Bethesda. It doesn’t seem likely that Bethesda has much planned for Morrowind, and with Skywind in development, modern gamers will have the opportunity to revisit one of the RPG genre’s classics that left a lasting impact.
Skywind Won’t Suffer The Same Problems As Skyblivion
There Are No Signs That A Morrowind Remaster Is Coming Anytime Soon
Apart from Skywind, there’s another fan-made remake in the pipeline – Skyblivion, which aims to transfer Oblivion into Skyrim’s engine and is set for release this year. However, the creators of Skyblivion have faced challenges following the unexpected release of Oblivion Remastered. Unlike them, it’s unlikely that Skywind will meet the same misfortune, as Fallout 3 is scheduled for a remaster next. Given the limited information about the Fallout 3 remaster project, we can assume that Skywind will be released before it, sparing the team from seeing their dreams dashed.
Compared to Oblivion, Morrowind is an older game and its graphics seem quite outdated. Therefore, Skywind, a potential remaster of Morrowind, might receive a larger graphical upgrade. Since Bethesda’s surprise release of Oblivion was controversial, if a Morrowind remaster does occur, the Skywind team will have more advance notice. Time should work in favor of the Skywind team, as a potential release within the next two years could avoid conflicts with Bethesda’s plans.
Morrowind Is The Most Fascinating Elder Scrolls Game For Modern Fans To Visit
There Isn’t A Modern Version Of The Game To Visit
Despite multiple re-releases for both Skyrim and Oblivion, and a remastered version of Oblivion, modern playability of Morrowind requires significant effort, which is an issue that Skywind aims to address. Although Daggerfall and Arena lack modern alternatives as well, Morrowind represents the time when The Elder Scrolls series found its footing and began to evolve into the intellectual property it is today. It is particularly cherished by dedicated fans of the series, who appreciate its unique appeal to young adult enthusiasts.
I’m not much older than Morrowind, but having spent an enormous amount of time playing Skyrim, I’ve always been drawn to the third Elder Scrolls title. The Dragonborn DLC sometimes feels like a tribute to it, and that’s what makes me eager for Skywind. It could provide a fresh, modern way to enjoy The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind when it eventually releases, allowing us to experience its unique blend of strangeness and mysticism without the discomfort that age might bring.
