Slingshot Director Calls New Film "Distant Cousin" to His Stephen King Classic 1408

As a gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of isolation tales that explore the depths of human psyche. From the eerie confines of P.T. to the haunting solitude of Outlast, these games have masterfully portrayed the terror of being alone amidst adversity. Now, Mikael Hafström’s new film, Slingshot, seems to be a cinematic cousin to these experiences, albeit in a more cosmic setting.

Mikael Hafstrom, director of the upcoming film “Slingshot” featuring Casey Affleck and Laurence Fishburne in outer space, notes a resemblance between this movie and his 2007 film “1408” based on Stephen King‘s story. In “1408“, John Cusack portrays a writer confined to a haunted hotel room, and the narrative delves into themes of isolation and its potential to drive one mad, especially when escape or human connection is elusive. Similarly, “Slingshot” explores similar ideas, although with multiple characters and a space station setting; this dynamic is distinct, particularly in terms of visuals and character interactions.

Discussing with ComicBook, H.F. Ström clarified the similarities, likening them as distant relatives. He went on to explain his preferences towards such narratives, detailing their allure.

In discussing with ComicBook, Hafstrom expressed that isolating individuals offers valuable insights into the human mind, alas, he said. The allure of “1408” for him was its confined setting – John Cusack’s character alone in a haunted hotel room. Viewers can interpret the film in two ways: as a tale about a man tormented in a devilish hotel or as a study of a man gradually losing his sanity within the same room. The same appeal held for “Slingshot,” which Hafstrom referred to as a distant relative due to its similarities, including a confined setting. Here, it’s a few characters aboard a spacecraft with Casey Affleck as the protagonist who questions his mental state – or is it so? The mystery lies in the reality of the situation. From a filmmaking perspective, Hafstrom saw it as a challenge to create excitement within such an isolated space and discover fresh perspectives after spending extended periods there – be it the hotel room or the spaceship.

Here’s the official synopsis for the movie:

A psychological thriller featuring Casey Affleck and Laurence Fishburne, Slingshot revolves around a group of top-tier astronauts embarking on an extended journey towards Saturn’s moon Titan, where the mission might be tainted. As they prepare for a risky slingshot maneuver that could either propel them to Titan or send them drifting into the vastness of space, one astronaut struggles more and more with keeping a firm grasp on his sanity.

Slingshot arrives in theaters on Friday.
