Slow Horses’ Hugo Weaving teases “ruthless” villain: “He’s not without charm”

As a dedicated fan with a soft spot for gripping spy dramas and a vast archive of movie memories, I eagerly anticipate the arrival of Slow Horses season 4, streaming on Apple TV+ from September 4th. The addition of Hugo Weaving to the cast as Frank Harkness is nothing short of a masterstroke, his versatile acting prowess lending an authenticity and depth to this complex character.

In each season of Slow Horses, a fresh case unfolds with new characters being introduced, and that trend continues as we delve into season 4.

This upcoming season will not only bring in fresh faces to Slough House, including Tom Brooke’s character JK Coe and Moira Tregorian, but it will also introduce Frank Harkness, portrayed by renowned actor Hugo Weaving who is famous for his roles in The Lord of the Rings and The Matrix.

Instead of labeling him as “black” or “white,” the actor mentioned that his character, Frank, is more like a shade of grey, perhaps “slate grey.” He emphasized that he doesn’t view people, even those who play villainous roles, in simple terms of good or bad.

In my opinion, this character is quite the enigma. He’s meticulously crafted and intellectually advanced in certain aspects, yet he operates outside the norms, exhibiting a rebellious streak. Above all, he possesses an uncanny lack of emotion or sentimentality.

“He’s tough, yet has an appealing side. This year, we notice a lot of sophistication from him. He’s a sophisticated individual, but there’s also a sense of danger, a strong presence, and a dangerous edge to him as well.”

“He’s constantly a looming danger, and I believe he poses a substantial risk. He often hints at his threat but keeps most of his moves hidden. This character is a slow-building tension throughout the season, but if you’ve read the books, you know that Frank has more to his story beyond this book.”

In Season 4, the Slough House squad is missing one of its members as Catherine Standish, portrayed by Saskia Reeves, stepped down at the close of Season 3. Yet, it seems her departure may not last too long according to recent revelations from Reeves herself.

She mentioned that her plans haven’t exactly followed the path she anticipated, or leaving hadn’t carried as much influence as she expected.

“It seems Lamb is hesitant about signing the resignation papers. Things with these individuals are never straightforward; they often lack clarity and instead, tend to be ambiguous. Consequently, her decision to depart appears uncertain and vague, not quite turning out as she had envisioned.”

Starting from September 4th, you can watch Slow Horses season 4 exclusively on Apple TV+. Don’t miss out; subscribe today!
