Slow Horses star discusses potential for character spin-off: “I’m game”

As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for unraveling complex narratives and character arcs, I must admit that the introduction of JK Coe in Slow Horses Season 4 has piqued my interest like never before. Tom Brooke’s portrayal of this enigmatic, rule-breaking agent is nothing short of captivating, and it’s evident that he’s not just playing a character – he’s channeling a soul scarred by horrific experiences.

As a devoted cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that the fourth season of Slow Horses brings a fresh wave of intriguing characters straight from Mick Herron’s novels into the limelight. Among them is JK Coe, skillfully portrayed by Tom Brooke.

The character, a new member of the Slough House team, has appeared in a number of Herron’s stories.

He mentioned that the person’s full name is Jason Kevin Coe, but he’s not fond of either of his given names. Instead, he prefers to be known as just “JK.”

His general demeanor suggests a desire for solitude. He manages his Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder by feigning piano playing as a coping mechanism.

“But Mick Herron has written him into two books. There’s a novella called The List, but there’s another really good full-length called Nobody Walks, which is sort of a Slough House universe book, which basically gives you his backstory, and it is absolutely horrific.

“I went ahead and did it, indeed. I’ve never received my background information like that before. However, if it exists and it’s as impressive as they say, it might be best not to alter it.”

When queried about potentially portraying the character JK in a reimagining of Nobody Walks, expanding upon his backstory within a new Slow Horses series, he responded affirmatively, expressing enthusiasm for continuing to play the role: “Absolutely! To be honest, I’d never want to give up playing him.”

“He is really special. He’s someone that the rules just don’t seem to apply to – any rules, ever. I definitely have not ever played anyone like that before, and I’m not quite sure how I would in the future.

I’m hoping they’ll be operating from this peculiar location, as it encourages thinking beyond conventional boundaries; it was quite refreshing to always think outside the box there.

“So, if someone wants to do that more, I’m game.”

There certainly would seem to be potential there for Slow Horses spin-offs.

Lately, showrunner Will Smith expressed his desire to adapt The Secret Hours for the screen as well. This is another standalone novel set within the Slough House universe, offering a deeper look into the past of Jackson Lamb, portrayed by Gary Oldman.
