As a connoisseur of all things entertainment and a seasoned Emmy Awards spectator, I must say that this year’s winners have truly outdone themselves! The talent we witnessed was nothing short of extraordinary.
Was Will Smith at the 2024 Emmys? Technically no, but there was a Will Smith present.
In his acceptance speech at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on September 15, Slow Horses screenwriter Will Smith felt compelled to set the record straight regarding some misunderstandings about his work. (You can find photos from the red carpet event here and a full list of winners here.)
Following his victory over contenders like Peter Morgan and Meriel Sheibani-Clare from The Crown, Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner of Fallout, Francesca Sloane and Donald Glover of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, as well as Justin Marks, Rachel Kondo, and Caillin Puente from Shogun, he made it clear to the audience that he should not be mistaken for the Oscar-winning actor.
“First of all, relax,” he began his acceptance speech. “Despite my name, I come in peace.”
It appears the comment was made in relation to Will Smith’s actions at the 2022 Oscars, where he infamously struck Chris Rock after a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s hairstyle.
It appears that the former Men in Black actor was seen attending the 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix instead of the Emmy Awards, as he made an appearance there just prior to the award ceremony.
In his September 15th Instagram post, he expressed, “Hanging out with Lewis Hamilton (@lewishamilton) and others, not abduction this time, plus Charles Leclerc (@charles_leclerc) and Carlos Sainz (@carlossainz55). Wishing you all a great race!
But don’t discount Smith—the actor, not the writer—from making an Emmys appearance in the future. Though he was hit with a 10-year ban from the Oscars for his behavior toward Rock, he has been making his way to other award shows.
Indeed, the Fresh Prince premiered his own tune titled “You Can Make It” during an exhilarating display of fireworks at the 2024 BET Awards in June. Notably, Glover, who was competing against another Will Smith for this year’s Emmy awards, made a witty remark about the rapper sharing a name with a renowned music legend during the show.
He pointed out that he has a higher number of Grammy awards compared to Will Smith, yet this fact seems illogical. However, he possesses an equal number of BET Awards as Sam Smith.
