As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that Paramount Pictures has revealed the captivating first teaser for the Smurftastic reboot of “Smurfs“. This CG-animated reinvention is inspired by the comic strips and graphic novels by Peyo. The enchanting character of Smurfette, voiced by the multi-talented Rihanna, is a creation of the sorcerer Gargamel before she undergoes Papa Smurf’s transformative smurfification process. Interestingly, Rihanna, an Academy Award nominee for her song “Lift Me Up” from “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”, has penned and sung the original songs for this film. The narrative is a comical, musical journey that endeavors to shed light on one of life’s profound questions: What truly defines a Smurf?

Rihanna heads an impressive ensemble featuring Nick Offerman, Natasha Lyonne, JP Karliak, Daniel Levy, Amy Sedaris, Nick Kroll, James Corden, Octavia Spencer, Hannah Waddingham, Sandra Oh, Alex Winter, Xolo Maridueña, and Billie Lourd. John Goodman and Kurt Russell also join the cast. The actors are known for their roles in shows like “The Last of Us,” “Schitt’s Creek,” “Star Wars: The Mandalorian,” “Big Mouth,” “Peter Rabbit,” “The Help,” “The Fall Guy,” “Invincible,” “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure,” “Blue Beetle,” and “American Horror Story.
2011’s “Puss in Boots” director Chris Miller, who has been with DreamWorks Animation for a long time and contributed as a story artist to 2001’s “Shrek” and 2005’s “Madagascar”, and served as a script consultant on 2019’s “The Addams Family”, is now directing based on a script penned by Pam Brady, who is known for writing “South Park” episodes and the movie “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken”.
Miller remarked at the 2024 Annecy Animation Festival that the DNA from Peyo’s original sketches heavily influences numerous creative decisions in the film. He considers this blueprint crucial for the type of movie he aims to create. Essentially, all the action sequences and thought bubbles from the comics will be incorporated into the film, and the comics have been a significant influence on the light-hearted and bouncy animation style, filled with squash and stretch effects.
Miller went on to explain, “It’s crucial to ponder, ‘What universal elements resonate with people and evoke fondness?’ It’s essential to maintain and appreciate these aspects.’ The original Smurfs comics served as our guide, both in terms of plot and visual style. Then, we search for chances within this framework. For instance, the Smurf village – a mystical, magical location. You can slightly alter or expand its history. ‘Where did they come from? Why do they live there?’
Apart from her music career, Rihanna is collaborating on the animated Smurfs film with Ryan Harris (known for The Lego Batman Movie), as well as Laurence “Jay” Brown and Tyran “Ty-Ty” Smith, who are music executives at Rihanna’s record label, Roc Nation, which was founded by Jay-Z.
Smurfs, the beloved characters from Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Movies (Transformers One and The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants), are set to grace the big screen once more on July 18.
