This SNL 50 show has nearly everything—except Bill Hader’s long-awaited return.
On February 16th, for Saturday Night Live’s golden jubilee special, numerous actors who had been part of SNL throughout its history—including Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Pete Davidson—graced the Studio 8H stage once more, reprising their most memorable characters. Yet, there were some conspicuous absences among these returnees. Apart from original cast member Dan Aykroyd, one much-loved actor who was missed was Bill, a consistent presence on the sketch comedy show from 2005 to 2013.
However, although he wasn’t spotted on the red carpet, his absence from Weekend Update as the famous New York City correspondent Stefon made it clear to fans that he was not going to make an unexpected cameo.
He didn’t attend the red carpet event, but not showing up on Weekend Update as Stefon made it clear he wasn’t coming back.
On X, previously known as Twitter, a fan expressed, “I assumed I’d watch Bill Hader as Stefon, but it turned out to be just an ordinary Sunday instead.
Another fan echoed on social media, “Wow, I guess Bill Hader really isn’t going to be on the show.”
It’s been seven long years since Stefon shared his top club picks in NYC. However, he made a comeback in 2018 on Lorne Michael’s iconic show, appearing alongside current co-anchor Colin Jost and former SNL writer John Mulaney, with whom he worked on the character. During his advice for enjoying St. Patrick’s Day in the city, the comedian couldn’t help but burst into laughter, breaking character just two minutes into the sketch.
It appears that Bill, who is in a relationship with comedian Ali Wong, has been nostalgic about his time at 30 Rockefeller Plaza as he recently resurrected an SNL character for a Volkswagen advertisement. Notably, he also collaborated once more with former colleagues Kristen Wiig and Fred Armisen to revive “The Californians,” a well-known trio that spoofs a soap opera using exaggerated SoCal accents.
To put it simply, Barry’s star shone brightly on the Saturday Night Live stage, creating countless cherished moments. However, not every sketch ran smoothly; some had their rough patches, such as one that nearly caused an accident involving Justin Bieber.
During a 2021 episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers, Bill shared with his fellow SNL alum Seth Meyers that “Song for Daddy” was performed by Justin Bieber and the accompanying sketch. He added, “Every conceivable mishap that could happen in a sketch did happen during that particular sketch.
He quickly thought, “It seemed as though the prop set was about to collapse on Justin Bieber,” he explained further. “I attempted to incorporate it into the skit somehow. However, I realized that all the necessary props were missing. The whole thing turned out disastrously.
Even though Bill was absent, continue reading to discover all the cast members, hosts, and special guests who celebrated Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary at 30 Rock.
