Ever since whispers have circulated about Lorne Michaels, the mastermind behind “Saturday Night Live,” potentially retiring, there’s been a sense of uncertainty in the air. For years, he hinted at his own retirement, but with the iconic sketch comedy series celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, Michaels chose to carry on, delaying the handover for now. However, one illustrious figure associated with SNL decided it was time for a change, and though he’s not among the rumored cast members or writers, his contributions have been instrumental to the show’s success.
Stephen DeMaria, who has been responsible for the set design at Saturday Night Live since its inception, is retiring. At 87 years old, DeMaria opened up about his decision and other topics during a profile featured in The New York Times. A true legend, DeMaria not only made SNL’s set as iconic as it has become but also played a significant role in shaping some of the most unforgettable moments in television history. Despite the demanding schedule at SNL, DeMaria has relished every moment of it and offers a heartfelt piece of advice he has learned from his experiences: enjoy each minute of your life’s journey.
As I approach the age of 88, I can honestly say that I’ve never known a day of boredom. I invite each one of you to emulate my path, live joyously, and never let your spirits wane.
DeMaria has consistently adhered to his own counsel, as he himself recounts, he’s always managed to enjoy life to the fullest during his time at Saturday Night Live. The set coordinator had a reputation for dancing up a storm at the show’s post-parties, fully immersing himself in the glamorous happenings that come with working at one of television’s most iconic workplaces. One of his most cherished memories was sharing the dance floor with Mick Jagger, a regular host and musical guest on the show.
He was dancing all over the studio, so I got involved. I was dancing with Mick Jagger!
Beyond being exceptional at his role within a significant comedy establishment, DeMaria exuded an old-school allure and dedication. Moreover, he was a joy to socialize with and a regular figure at the post-events gatherings. Regrettably, his enthusiasm led him to suffer from a broken hip last year, following a fall on a curb after a night of dancing. Despite this setback, he’s using a cane to walk and is eager to return to his work soon.
I’m hoping to be free from this walking stick soon, and then I’ll be dancing on the dance floor in a way that will surely amaze you!
After indicating that DeMaria plans to return to dancing, there’s no question in my mind he will do so. However, it seems the legend is wrapping up his tenure with the sketch comedy series. Over numerous years, he has poured a significant portion of his life into this show, designing sets for iconic SNL sketches such as Matt Foley, Domingo, and More Cowbell. Given his exceptional contributions to one of television’s favorite shows, it is only fair that he now enjoys some well-deserved leisure and repose. The future of SNL remains bright, but the absence of DeMaria in the studio and on the dance floor will surely be felt.
