The recent forecasts for Disney’s upcoming live-action version of Snow White have been revised downward compared to earlier predictions this month. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the movie is projected to earn approximately $48-$58 million in its opening weekend domestically. Currently, $53 million is considered a significant goal. This represents a substantial decrease from the initial forecasts, which anticipated a debut between $63-$70 million for Snow White.
Despite Snow White’s opening falling at the lower end of expectations, it would surpass Mufasa: The Lion King’s $35.4 million domestic debut. However, Snow White would still lag behind the initial releases of most Disney’s live-action remakes. Four of these films opened with over $100 million domestically, led by The Lion King at a record-breaking $191.7 million. Aladdin and The Little Mermaid also debuted with over $90 million each. Moreover, there’s a noticeable difference between Snow White’s opening and the performances of Cinderella ($67.8 million) and Maleficent ($69.4 million).
The live-action movie version of “Snow White” is set to debut in cinemas on March 21st. It’s been said that this film has a hefty production budget of around $240 million, placing it among Disney’s priciest live-action remakes. In the lead-up to its premiere, “Snow White” has stirred up quite a bit of controversy, with issues like Rachel Zegler’s casting and the representation of the dwarves causing criticism. The movie’s buzz seems to be a mix of positive and negative, which could potentially influence its box office performance.
Disney gave a boost to the promotion of “Snow White” by releasing a fresh trailer and the classic tune “Waiting on a Wish” in December. Although it wasn’t one of the movies showcased during this month’s Super Bowl, anticipation is growing as the film’s release date approaches, with only a few weeks remaining.
Following the initial release of Captain America: Brave New World, its performance at the box office was less than stellar, with a 68% drop in viewership during its second weekend. This underwhelming debut could be another setback for Disney. As Snow White is opening prematurely before the summer blockbuster season and isn’t encountering much competition within its intended audience, the studio may have anticipated more promising figures at this point. While there’s a possibility that the projections for Snow White could improve (particularly if reviews are favorable), it appears unlikely to set any records. The fact that the estimates have already decreased significantly isn’t a positive sign for the movie’s success.
Remember that Mufasa initially flopped but went on to earn over $700 million globally, despite receiving mixed reviews. Hypothetically, Snow White could also follow this pattern and perform well even if it doesn’t start off strong. April isn’t packed with major releases (apart from Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, which caters to a different demographic), so Snow White has the opportunity for a successful run. It will be intriguing to see how it fares in theaters.
