It’s possible that one of the lesser-known DC antagonists is Clayface. Initially, he was depicted as a moderately successful actor who assumed the role of a character he played in a horror movie after turning to criminal activities. His body appears to be made of clay and has been featured in numerous films, series, animated works, video games, and other media over the years. Now, a standalone film for Clayface is being developed from a script by director Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep), who will also direct the upcoming Exorcist movie. So, who will be in charge of directing the Clayface film?
It will be British director James Watkins who is set to lead the upcoming remake of ‘Speak No Evil,’ starring James McAvoy. This project will be produced by DC co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran, as well as Matt Reeves, director of ‘The Batman.’ The film, rumored to be a horror-thriller-tragedy, may not feature the infamous villain Clayface as traditionally portrayed in the Batman universe. Given Watkins’ past work, such as the relentlessly grim ‘Eden Lake,’ starring Michael Fassbender and Kelly Reilly as a couple tormented by a gang led by Jack O’Connell, he could be perfectly suited for this project. He also directed the successful film adaptation of the play and book, ‘The Woman in Black,’ which starred Daniel Radcliffe.
The movie, which carries a production budget of $40 million, is reportedly going to be a chilling Hollywood production that revolves around a B-movie actor. This character supposedly injects something into himself in an attempt to stay relevant within the industry, unknowingly gaining the ability to mold his own physical form like pliable clay.
The Clayface movie has a 11th September 2026 release date.
