As reported by CBS News, the beginning of 2025 marked Ecuador’s most violent period, averaging one murder every hour. From January to March, as per AP reports, a total of 2,345 violent deaths were documented, with 742 of these taking place in Guayaquil.
The coastal city is said to be one of the nation’s riskiest areas according to the Associated Press. Authorities claim that illicit drugs are shipped out of this city’s ports towards Europe, Central America, and the U.S.
It’s not uncommon for athletes to face such situations. For instance, soccer player Pedro Perlaza was abducted in December 2024 from Esmeraldas, a city located north of the capital Quito, as reported by CBS News.
