As a seasoned movie critic with a diverse background and a penchant for historical accuracy, I find myself captivated by the gritty realism of SAS Rogue Heroes. The second series, in particular, stands out for its unique twist – instead of the usual information gathering mission, Eve Mansour is tasked with training the French Resistance by the SAS. This character, played brilliantly by the versatile Sofia Boutella, resonates deeply with me as she embodies the spirit of numerous real-life heroines who fought valiantly during WWII.

Where do we find Eve Mansour at the beginning of series two?
As a cinephile, I find myself immersed in the gripping tale of a courageous woman who continues to stand tall amidst the tumultuous backdrop of the French Resistance. However, her current assignment deviates somewhat from the norm – instead of merely gathering intel for General de Gaulle, she’s tasked with an unusual objective: she must persuade the French Resistance to learn under the tutelage of the Special Air Service (SAS). It’s a delicate dance, one that requires both tact and determination if success is to be achieved.
What appealed to you about playing Eve?
I felt truly thrilled to contribute to something genuinely authentic, and I wished my character was a genuine historical figure. However, Eve is modeled after individuals who fought valiantly during World War II. Notably, they weren’t just French; they were women from numerous nations, such as Nancy Wake from New Zealand, Violette Szabo who had both French and British roots, Noor Inayat Khan, and American Virginia Hall. These remarkable women made significant contributions in the areas of intelligence, logistics, and physically liberating countries from the Nazis. Essentially, Eve embodies these incredible figures.
Have you worked on quite a few high-budget films such as the Kingsman series, Argylle, and Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon. What was the experience like working on this BBC television production differently compared to your previous projects?
In “SAS Rogue Heroes,” particularly during season 2, the scope is expansive, and our work duration was extensive. Notably, compared to my previous roles, I’m involved in less action sequences. However, despite Eve carrying a gun and firing at Nazis in season 2, there was less intense training required for me.

Do you enjoy playing those action roles?
In response to your question, it really depends on the company you’re in. If given the opportunity, I would say yes, but my interest in acting wasn’t initially driven by a love for action scenes. Action films aren’t my usual preference as a viewer. However, fortune favors the prepared, and that’s how I landed the role in “Kingsman.” The director asked if I could perform a round kick, which was something I could do since I was a dancer and flexible. I picked up new skills quickly and absorbed instructions effortlessly, so I continued to train. Before long, people started thinking I could handle action films. Interestingly, I didn’t have any fight or action training until I was 31 years old. [French-Algerian actress Boutella is now 42.]
Does this series glamorise violence?
As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but be captivated by the unique appeal of this show. The characters, though young and brimming with freedom, had an infectious enthusiasm for their service, particularly when it came to the SAS – they were fearless, always pushing boundaries and going all in. However, as we move into season two, we witness not just the exhilaration, but also the heavy toll this life took on them, both mentally and physically. This balanced portrayal of the thrill and the cost is what makes it an honest and compelling watch.
Do you think there would be as many wars if women ran the world?
Not at all. I mean, maybe not — it depends what time of the month it is. I’m joking!
