Sofia Richie Shares Details About "Traumatic" Labor and Postpartum

Sofia Richie‘s Instagram feed is a heartwarming glimpse into her life as a new mother. From cuddling with her adorable daughter Eloise Samantha Grainge to showcasing her mini-me’s impeccable fashion sense, it’s clear that Sofia is embracing every moment of motherhood with grace and style.

Sofia Richie has seen the beauty and the pain of pregnancy and postpartum.

In May, the model gave birth to her daughter Eloise alongside her husband Elliot Grainge. She recently shared that she experienced some minor health issues prior to delivering their little girl.

The 26-year-old mentioned during the She MD podcast that her pregnancy was wonderful up until approximately week 32. She then shared, “One morning I woke up feeling extremely tired and with a significant backache. I also felt a bit crampy. I thought it was just another regular pregnancy symptom, but I decided to text Dr. A and inform her about it.

Instead, she replied, “However, she suggested, ‘Perhaps it would be best if you consulted with a fetal specialist for checks, just to ensure everything is alright. Then you can return home. It’s no cause for alarm.’

Following that recommendation, she headed to the hospital, only to learn there that she had entered active labor at 32 weeks.

Sofia, Lionel Richie’s youngest daughter from his relationship with Diane Alexander, expressed fear when the doctor shared the news. She was relieved because they immediately connected her to a monitor and they informed her that she was in active labor.

Initially, she anticipated her visit would only last a few hours; however, it extended into a six-night hospital stay due to ongoing monitoring.

However, following her release and a six-week period of bed rest, labor was initiated naturally within her, culminating in induction at the 38th week.

When it came time to welcome Elosie, Sofia said “I had a fantastic delivery.”

After giving birth, she exclaimed in awe, ‘I can’t believe I actually did that!’ She endured several weeks of contractions and now has her precious baby girl. Both are healthy and secure.

Nevertheless, Sofia’s recuperation didn’t turn out to be an effortless journey. In fact, merely two days following the birth of her daughter, Sofia started feeling unwell.

Reflecting on the incident, I remembered how my body suddenly expanded, much like a balloon that’s been filled too quickly. Physically, I swelled up, feeling quite unwell in the process. My condition prompted Dr. A to dispatch her dedicated nurse. Upon examination, my blood pressure was alarmingly high – 165 over 103 – a level that’s hard to ignore.

As reported by Dr. A, Sofia experienced a postpartum form of preeclampsia – a relatively uncommon condition characterized by increased blood pressure and high levels of protein in urine following delivery. Tragically, this complication led to Sofia’s readmission to the hospital.

Admitting that it was undeniably challenging, she shared her experience of parting from her newborn daughter just two days after childbirth. It was excruciatingly painful, to the point where she found solace by hiding in a closet and weeping.

In an effort to ensure my wellbeing, my loving husband expressed his concern, stating, “You need to go to the hospital as the doctor suggests it isn’t secure for you to be at home.” Indeed, I found myself spending a grueling 24 hours in the hospital, and let me tell you, it was incredibly challenging.

It was the mom guilt that made the days of recovery away from her baby girl hard.

She confessed, “An overwhelming sense of responsibility washed over me.” She continued, “Ever since Eloise was born, I felt as though I couldn’t let even a waking moment pass me by, or let anyone else take charge of my child.

Three months into motherhood, I’ve finally regained my familiar sense of self, feeling whole and rejuvenated once more. Despite the minor hiccups during pregnancy, I find myself yearning for those cherished moments with my newborn daughter.

Sofia expressed, “After my pregnancy ended, I found myself yearning for that unique bond we shared. It’s a profound experience to be in such close quarters with your child, something you can never reclaim. When the baby emerges, you share this wonderful being with others, which is enchanting, but the moments between parent and child are exceptionally precious.
