Solar Opposites: Dan Stevens Opens Up About Taking Over the Show's Lead Role (Exclusive)

As a longtime fan of animated adult comedy and someone who appreciates the art of voice acting, I was thrilled to learn that Dan Stevens had taken over as the lead for Solar Opposites. The series’ bold decision to replace Justin Roiland with a completely different actor, rather than trying to replicate his performance, has proven to be a stroke of genius.

In the case of the hit animated series, Solar Opposites, they sought a replacement for their lead actor and producer, Justin Roiland, when the role called for a change. This is in stark contrast to Rick and Morty, where both roles were previously held by Roiland. Unlike Rick and Morty, which opted to maintain the original voices by casting new actors who could mimic them precisely, Solar Opposites seized this opportunity to introduce something fresh for the character Korvo. Dan Stevens, a beloved actor in the genre world, stepped into the role, bringing a distinctive British accent to his portrayal of Korvo.

In a marvelous transformation, the altered voice of Korvo significantly enhanced “Solar Opposites,” allowing the series to capitalize on this character makeover. With its fifth season now streaming on Hulu, ComicBook had the opportunity to talk with Stevens about his role as the new main character in “Solar Opposites” before its return.

Stevens shared with us that he considers it a genuine treasure and is an ardent admirer of adult animation. He’s long had a fascination for voiceovers and animation, gradually venturing into this sector of the entertainment industry. It may surprise you to learn that this process takes more time than one might expect. Just because someone appears in numerous TV shows, movies, or other productions doesn’t guarantee an automatic entry into these specific roles. Some people are reluctant to venture here, but it’s a genuine passion of his. He enjoys every moment of it. When the opportunity for the voice role presented itself, he eagerly stepped forward. Mike [McMahon] found the idea of this irate, distinctively British character quite amusing. They came up with a delightfully straightforward, innocent, and whimsical way to convey “Okay, things are different now.”

“Back then, it was common practice to replace an actor without much fuss, but it seems less frequent these days. I was surprised yet pleased that I could seamlessly step into the role. Overall, it appears the fans have accepted it quite well. If anything, this change highlights the unique identity of our show compared to Rick and Morty. Earlier, the shows shared a distinctive voice, but now they’ve developed their own distinct identities.”

Stevens further explained that his authentic accent was consistently preferred by the Solar team, not because they wanted him to alter his voice dramatically, but rather to maintain an essence distinct from Roiland’s portrayal. The aim was to create a sound that was uniquely different yet still effectively conveyed Korvo’s character.

“When asked to bring my native accent to life for Korvo, I understood it was more about maintaining his unique tone and character. He’s a meticulous fellow, stuck on this lousy planet but determined to make the best of it, all while harboring a deep affection for Terry. I believe that’s where the sweetness and optimism originate. It’s like being part of another dysfunctional family that always finds a way to navigate any obstacle. Plus, we share an unbreakable bond through our love for each other. I can’t get enough of Thomas [Middleditch]’s portrayal of Terry – it’s absolutely delightful to act alongside him!”

You can now watch Season 5 of “Solar Opposites” on Hulu, along with the initial four seasons of the show. The series has been granted a sixth season as well.
