This year at the Crunchyroll Awards, it was truly an honor to see my favorite protagonist, Sung Jinwoo from the phenomenal series “Solo Leveling,” snag the award for Best Main Character. The show has been ruling the roost at these ceremonies, and this win only solidified its dominance.
Now, while I wholeheartedly believe that “Solo Leveling” should’ve taken home the title of Best Action Series of the Year, the awards sparked quite a stir over how winners are chosen and why certain series didn’t deserve the recognition they received. One of the most hotly debated categories was Best Main Character, and though Jinwoo certainly has a massive fanbase, there were two other characters who, in my humble opinion, were far more deserving of that title.
Since Season 2 commenced, the series has faced a significant increase in criticism, particularly with regards to the character Sung Jinwoo. Although his storyline involving his mother’s health was well-executed, many viewers feel that Jinwoo’s character has become hollow, favoring action scenes and battles over meaningful interactions, dynamics, and conflicts. The show seems overly focused on him, and his tendency to either save or humiliate other characters doesn’t help matters. What adds fuel to the fire is that he always emerges victorious, regardless of the situation, and has shown little to no character development. This lackluster progression has left many fans questioning whether Jinwoo truly deserved the award he received. To make matters worse, his victory over Maomao and Frieren has only intensified fan frustration.
Either Frieren or Maomao Should Have Won the Best Main Character Award
Frieren, a relaxed elf over a thousand years old, rapidly won over fans by embodying the idea of cherishing the people you encounter. Her bond with Himmel and Fern, her moments of epic coolness like vanquishing Aura and acing exams, flashbacks to her past with her original group, and her gradual understanding of humans make her an intensely influential and emotionally powerful character. In contrast, Maomao charms audiences with her unique personality, and as the story unfolds, we discover her thoughtfully crafted character traits like her affection for her father and companions from the brothel, along with her romantic involvement with Jinshi. Her ardor for medicine and exceptional intelligence have made her one of the most adored characters in recent memory.
In the game “Delicious in Dungeon”, Laios may not receive as much attention as other characters, but he’s still an excellent pick and absolutely worthy of recognition. Over the years, awards have gone to outstanding picks like Monkey D. Luffy, Eren Yeager, and others, making it all the more disheartening when a character such as Jinwoo wins one. It’s no secret that Crunchyroll Awards are heavily influenced by popular vote, and Jinwoo certainly has his supporters. However, in this instance, there were far better alternatives to choose from.
