As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for immersive experiences and a soft spot for anime-inspired games, I must confess that the trailer for Nikke: Goddess of Victory left me quite intrigued. Having spent countless hours in the digital worlds of Sword Art Online, Fairy Tail, and Kaguya-Sama Love Is War!, I can appreciate the quality of animation and storytelling that A-1 Pictures brings to the table.
Last year, “Solo Leveling” was one of the most impressive animated shows, expertly transforming the Webtoon into an enchanting spectacle that left high hopes for all other anime that debuted in 2024. The studio responsible for the adaptation, A-1 Pictures, is renowned for creating hit series such as “Kaguya-Sama: Love Is War!”, “Fairy Tail”, and arguably most famously, “Sword Art Online”. Now, the studio has released an enticing preview for the popular mobile game, “Nikke”.
The full promotional video is only around three minutes long, but does an excellent job bringing some of the game’s core characters to life. The special is titled “Old Tales,” which primarily follows one of the main characters from the game, SSR Nikke Cinderella, to celebrate the game’s second anniversary, and to promote Nikke‘s latest story event, which shares a title with the animated promo. The storyboarding and technical animation were handled by Yusuke Shibata at A-1 Pictures, with Rina Morita, known for her work on another mobile game franchise called Hypnosis Mic, working as both the chief animation director and character designer. The background music used in the short, titled “Unbreakable”, was written and produced by Cosmograph with a stunning vocal performance by Yurisa.
Nikke Has Become a Global Phenomenon For Its unique Blend of Gacha and Action
The globally acclaimed game titled “Nikke: Goddess of Victory” is characterized as an immersive third-person shooter with gacha elements. This intriguing production was brought to life by the South Korean gaming studio Shift Up back in 2017, and was finally released on mobile devices in 2022, followed by a Windows version launch in 2023. Players can delve into an array of strategic aspects, enabling them to swiftly change characters and employ various abilities to accomplish missions. Although the game is free-to-play, it includes a gacha system that lets players acquire unique units, which has been incredibly successful, raking in over $70 million USD within a single month following its initial release.
In a post-apocalyptic setting where Earth is controlled by extraterrestrials known as Raptures, the remaining humans established an underground civilization to regroup and create artificial humanoid soldiers called Nikke. The objective is to reclaim Earth. The Commander, a graduate from Military Academy, leads a crucial squad named “Counters” consisting of significant characters that players interact with during gameplay. Although Nikke generally adheres to its own narrative, it has also collaborated with popular anime series such as Chainsaw Man, introducing Power, Makima, and Himeno as playable characters. Additionally, a collaboration with Nier: Automata was established, adding 2B to the game’s roster. The latest content collaboration took place in March 2024, featuring Emilia, Rem, and Ram as new playable characters.
