In the much-anticipated battle between Jinwoo and the Ant King, Solo Leveling delivered an incredible showdown that left fans in awe. The latest episode has been hailed as one of the best in Season 2, setting new benchmarks on Crunchyroll for viewership. Despite the episode exceeding expectations in terms of animation and action, it omitted a scene from the original comic. Although this scene might seem inconsequential at first glance, it could potentially impact a significant upcoming plot point about Jinwoo’s abilities in the anime.
In the anime adaptation of “Solo Leveling,” Episode 12 of Season 2 omits a key scene from Chapter 101 of the original webtoon. This scene involves Jinwoo utilizing his shadow extraction ability on the deceased ants following the Ant King’s confrontation with Goto Ryuji, thereby augmenting his army. The event is captured on camera and broadcast nationwide in the webtoon and novel version, serving to subtly hint at Jinwoo’s necromancer abilities, a secret hitherto unknown to other hunters. If this scene isn’t reintroduced later in the series, specifically during the climactic moment when Jinwoo employs his powers against the Ant King, the Queen, and Byung-gu, it may lead to some uncertainty about whether Jinwoo possesses the shadow ant troops at all.
Solo Leveling’s Anime Cuts Out Jinwoo Turning the Ants Into His Shadow Soldiers
In Chapter 101 of the webtoon, a camera captures Jinwoo’s arrival, prompting the broadcaster to go live instantly upon his scene entrance, disregarding a 10-minute delay. Shortly after, Jinwoo tackles a massive ant swarm. Iron then challenges the remaining ants with his prowess, followed by more ant deaths at his hands. Eventually, Jinwoo employs shadow extraction on the slain ants, distributing S-rank hunter healing potions afterward and engaging in combat with the Ant King or Beru. The cameraman records Jinwoo using shadow extraction on the ants, commenting mysteriously about ants battling each other when asked to clarify the situation for the viewing audience, who are informed that the entire nation is tuned in.
In Chapter 119 of the webnovel, the camera’s depiction of the ant soldiers as black dry ice statues of ant monsters makes it easier to understand that these soldiers are part of the ants’ army. This addition to Jinwoo’s forces helps him regain control over the remaining ants. However, contrary to the webnovel, Jinwoo in the anime doesn’t use shadow extraction on the dead ants and manages the swarm with his existing shadow soldiers alone. In Episode 12, Jinwoo contemplates turning the ants into shadows but changes his mind due to a large audience. Instead, the episode swiftly transitions to Beru’s arrival, causing two issues for the anime adaptation: first, the absence of Jinwoo using shadow extraction on dead ants; second, the sudden jump from Jinwoo’s contemplation to Beru’s arrival without properly addressing his decision not to turn the ants into shadows.
Solo Leveling’s Season 2 Finale Has To Fix a Huge Continuity Error
Within the story, it’s common knowledge among readers and viewers that Jinwoo has the ability to transform the deceased into his soldiers. However, this is a secret hidden from most of the characters within the narrative. Prior to the Jeju Ars, even the highest-ranked hunters were unaware of the full extent of Jinwoo’s summoning abilities or his identity as a necromancer. This aspect of Jinwoo is revealed shortly after the battle against the Ant King, although it remains concealed from the general public. The sight of Jinwoo resurrecting the dead ants serves as a prelude to this revelation, which comes as quite a shock to the Korean S-rank hunters.
The initial success of Jinwoo in overwhelming the ants with his current shadow army can be somewhat explained. However, the anime may need to include a scene of Jinwoo extracting shadows from the ants in the final episode to avoid a continuity error. If this scene is not added, there could be a significant inconsistency in the storyline.
This scene is crucial because these characters form a vital part of Jinwoo’s covert forces, contributing significantly to the completion of the dungeon after defeating the Ant King. Yet, it remains undetermined when this scene will smoothly fit back into the storyline in the anime. Ideally, it should be shown prior to Jinwoo employing shadow extraction on the Ant King and Queen, as the presence of ant shadows explains why Jinwoo cannot convert the Queen into one of his shadows too. Despite numerous changes and new scenes added in the anime adaptation of “Solo Leveling”, omitting this specific instance could potentially have serious repercussions for the series. In other words, while the latest episode was impressive, Season 2 of “Solo Leveling” still grapples with pacing problems, and hopefully future seasons will strike the right balance.
