What you need to know

  • Last week, we saw the first trailer for ‘A Minecraft Movie’ starring Jack Black and Jason Mamoa. The film will be released on April 5, 2025.
  • The CGI trailer got mixed reviews from fans, racking up over 1 million dislikes on YouTube.
  • Someone has remade the trailer as a completely animated adventure, and it looks great. The comments have been wholly positive.

As a long-time observer of pop culture and parent to a Minecraft-obsessed son, I must say that the trailer for ‘A Minecraft Movie’ has left me rather divided. On one hand, my 4-year-old found it utterly enthralling, his eyes wide with delight at every pixelated creature that danced across our screen. On the other, the cursed creatures in the original CGI trailer were a tad too reminiscent of a Skibidi Toilet crossover episode for my taste.

It’s only been a few days since Warner Brothers dropped the first trailer for ‘A Minecraft Movie’, complete with its cursed creatures that wouldn’t look out of place in a Skibidi Toilet crossover episode. I’m kidding, my son absolutely loved the trailer, but he also loves Skibidi Toilet…

Either way, reception for the trailer has been notoriously mixed, with it racking up 1.4 million dislikes on YouTube (for those who have the extension installed that lets you see it). Fans have compared the reveal to the first look at the Sonic the Hedgehog film, for which fan sentiment famously resulted in a delay and redesign of the main character. Today, a 3D artist on YouTube has shared their reimagined version of the trailer as a fully animated affair, and it actually changes the tone significantly. You can check out Alumio’s version of ‘A Minecraft Movie’ below, which we think is pretty great.

Reception for the animation is overwhelmingly positive

As a dedicated Minecraft enthusiast, I recently came across Alumio’s YouTube video with a humble statement: “We didn’t quite jive with the original film’s portrayal, so we decided to give it a fresh take.” This video has been garnering significant attention, amassing over 2 million views and 255k likes! The comments section is buzzing with reactions like, “Guys, this is undoubtedly the true official Minecraft trailer; I’m not swayed by any argument!” and “It’s astonishing that despite some dialogue concerns, this reimagined version is still an astounding 100 times more charming.

Jury is out on ‘A Minecraft Movie’

Before I had a chance to check out social media reactions about the Minecraft movie trailer, I had already watched it with my four-year-old son, who was thrilled by it. Although I found Jack Black being called Steve a bit strange and the Llama character gave me creepy vibes, I’m not the intended audience for this film. My son, who enjoys Skibidi Toilet and Blippi, certainly is.
