Approximately a month and a half since its debut, “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” has been consistently strong at the box office for Paramount. This weekend, it surpassed the box office record held by “Pokemon: Detective Pikachu,” becoming the highest-grossing live-action movie based on a video game. The 2019 Pokemon film made $450 million globally, while “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” has now amassed over $462 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo statistics. Despite this, it’s still far from Universal’s animated “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which made over $1.3 billion in 2023. However, when only live-action films are considered, Sonic currently holds the top spot.

View Urgent ForecastThe ongoing box office triumph of Sonic the Hedgehog is quite remarkable, considering it was made available for home viewing just last month. Despite this, a significant number of viewers are choosing to catch the film in cinemas instead of streaming it online. Whether this trend persists or not remains to be seen, but for now, Sonic appears to have more staying power than many other movies at present.
It’s not much of a secret that Paramount has been planning ahead for the future of the Sonic franchise. Recently, they announced that “Sonic the Hedgehog 4” will hit theaters on March 19th, 2027. As of now, information about the movie is limited; it’s expected that the original cast and director Jeff Fowler will be back for the film, although this hasn’t been officially confirmed yet. The ending of “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” paved the way for a sequel by introducing two popular characters who might play significant roles in the next movie. Additionally, it hinted at a possible spin-off featuring the character Shadow the Hedgehog, voiced by Keanu Reeves.
The future for Sonic the Hedgehog appears set, however, the prospects for Pokemon on the big screen are uncertain. Legendary Entertainment announced a follow-up to “Pokemon: Detective Pikachu” in February 2023, with active development underway. Since then, no updates have surfaced, and many involved in the original film express doubts about its potential realization. While there’s hope that Pikachu could regain his position from the blue speedster through a sequel, only time will tell!
The triumphs of Pokemon, Sonic, and Mario on the big screen have sparked a kind of video game land rush in Hollywood, with studios scrambling to discover the next major franchise to transform into television or movies. Almost every significant intellectual property appears to be in some stage of production, ranging from a Tomb Raider series featuring Sophie Turner, to Sony’s forthcoming Until Dawn film. It remains uncertain whether any of these will achieve similar success, but it’s clear why there’s so much enthusiasm!
