Sonic Generations Will be Delisted as a Standalone Title in September

As a longtime Sonic fan who has been running through Green Hill Zone since the Mega Drive days, this latest news about Sonic Generations leaves me with mixed feelings. On one hand, I’m thrilled that we’re getting an expanded remaster, Sonic X Shadow Generations, which is sure to bring back memories of classic Sonic gameplay. On the other hand, it’s a bit disheartening to see a beloved title like Sonic Generations being delisted, even if it will still be available in bundles.

It’s disappointingly frequent when games get remasters, and Sega has joined this trend by delisting Sonic Generations before the release of its enlarged remaster, Sonic X Shadow Generations. However, it’s important to note that Sega is doing this with a condition attached.

Via Twitter, Sega has declared that the original “Sonic Generations” will no longer be available for purchase on all platforms starting September 9. Yet, in response to fan feedback, the company intends to only remove the game as a standalone option. This implies you can still acquire it by purchasing bundles of other popular Sonic titles on Steam and Xbox.

For those who currently have the game, they can re-download and play it whenever they please. Moreover, Sega has clarified that modifications made to the original game on Steam won’t be impacted by its removal from the platform. Although it’s unfortunate that the game is being delisted, at least it’s not being completely erased.

The enhanced version of Sonic X Shadow Generations, which is titled as such, will be available on October 25th for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and personal computers.

Consequently, Sonic Generations can still be obtained through packages of other famous Sonic games on Steam and Xbox. Those who already own the game can continue to access and play it too. Moreover, we’re pleased to clarify that mods on the Steam version remain unaffected!
