Following the third installment, it’s high time we elevate the Sonic the Hedgehog series to unprecedented altitudes… figuratively speaking. Despite the release of three Sonic movies so far, it appears that this franchise is merely scratching the surface. The initial trilogy has showcased popular characters such as Tails, Knuckles, Ivo Robotnik, Shadow, and naturally, Sonic himself. With three films under our belt, we’re still encountering fresh faces within the series. For instance, Amy Rose and Metal Sonic were both unveiled in the after-credits of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, demonstrating that there are countless tales yet to be spun in this universe.
Notably, “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” stood out as the most acclaimed and profitable film in the series. The movie received rave reviews; even Rachel Labonte from Ebaster gave it a commendable score of 8/10. Our review, along with many others, indicates that critics are eager for more “Sonic the Hedgehog” films, a sentiment shared by most fans. Consequently, it’s expected that there will be numerous movies in the “Sonic” franchise. However, after the third movie, I hope future Sonic the Hedgehog films delve deeper into the cosmic aspects of the series.
All The Sonic Movies Have (Mostly) Been Set On Earth
Sonic Finds A Home On Earth In The Sonic The Hedgehog Franchise
Although the principal characters in the Sonic the Hedgehog series are extraterrestrial beings, the movies have predominantly unfolded on Earth. In the opening scene of the first movie, Sonic is depicted secretly residing in Green Hills, a quaint town located in Montana. Over time, Sonic crosses paths with Tom, who later assumes his protective role. By the conclusion of the third film, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles have moved in with Tom and Maddie, forming an affectionate family unit.
Sonic Movies | Worldwide Box Office | RT Critics Score |
---|---|---|
Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) | $302,452,077 | 64% |
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022) | $403,824,597 | 69% |
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024) | $489,906,388 | 85% |
Due to their long-term residency on Earth, figures such as Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles no longer feel alienated on the planet. Since they are now integral parts of Earth’s storyline, the majority of the series has been based on our world, making it relatable for viewers. Although the initial two films culminated on Earth, the ending of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 transported them to space, offering a unique twist. This space adventure served as a breath of fresh air for the franchise, but there’s still room for more cosmic journeys.
As a fan of the Sonic series, I thoroughly enjoyed the climax of Sonic 3 where characters like Sonic, Shadow, Tails, and Knuckles defeated Gerald Robotnik and his Eclipse Cannon in space. However, most of the film was Earth-bound. Even in the space scenes, the familiar contours of our planet were visible behind the action. It works for the movie’s narrative, but I yearn for future Sonic films to delve deeper into the cosmos. Expanding the franchise to include exploration of various alien planets would set these movies apart from the first three in the series.
The Sonic Movies Have Showcased Other Planets, But I Still Want To See More
Only Two Distant Planets Have Been Seen In The Sonic The Hedgehog Movies
In the Sonic the Hedgehog movies, we’ve seen other planets like Mobius. For instance, before Sonic lands in Green Hill, Montana, he is depicted with Longclaw, an anthropomorphic owl who acted as his guardian on the planet Mobius. Longclaw raised Sonic on Mobius, but when they were attacked by echidnas, she sent him to Earth. Meanwhile, the villain Ivo Robotnik is transported to the Mushroom Planet at the end of the first Sonic film. However, he doesn’t stay there for long; he soon returns to Earth and sets his sights on revenge against Sonic in the sequel.
Apart from Mobius and the Mushroom Planet, no other distant worlds featured in the Sonic the Hedgehog movie series. Although Mobius and the Mushroom Planet are distinctive settings in the franchise, they’re not extensively explored in the films. Instead, all three Sonic movies have predominantly unfolded on Earth. The films have been fantastic, but it’s a bit disheartening because the Sonic the Hedgehog series has the potential to transport viewers to new locations using Sonic’s rings or other means.
Sonic Spinoffs Could Explore The Cosmic Side Of The Franchise
A Shadow The Hedgehog Spinoff Could Be Set In Space
Every Sonic the Hedgehog film has grown increasingly grandiose. Given the triumph of the third movie, it’s tantalizing to envision how Sonic the Hedgehog 4 might delve deeper into the cosmic aspects of the series. Such an expansion could significantly broaden the franchise’s scope. Yet, aside from Sonic 4, other standalone stories could also be set on planets beyond Earth. Post-third film, the spinoff that fans are most eager for would likely center around Shadow.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast of all things Sonic, if a standalone Shadow the Hedgehog movie ever materializes, it’d be a golden chance to propel this captivating universe into the cosmos! In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Shadow makes a dramatic crash-landing on Earth, but his origin remains a mystery. In the game series, it turns out that Shadow is the biological offspring of Black Doom, who rules an army from the Black Comet. Although the Black Comet isn’t technically a planet, this enigmatic cosmic location within the Sonic universe has me yearning for a potential spinoff to delve into its secrets and unravel the mysteries that surround Shadow’s past!
What Would Happen To The Human Characters If A Sonic Movie Was Set In Space?
Sonic The Hedgehog Movies Don’t Need Human Characters
Introducing Black Doom as one cosmic character in the Sonic the Hedgehog universe could pave the way for more expansive cosmic settings and characters. Given that many key characters are already extraterrestrial, it would be exciting to delve deeper into the wider cosmos. However, if a future Sonic movie or spin-off primarily takes place in space, it’s probable that human characters may not have significant roles to play.
In the world of Sonic, both Tom and Maddie play significant roles, but let’s face it, they might not need a space adventure. The truth is, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, Amy Rose, and numerous other characters from the Sonic universe are what truly captivates us. If reducing the screen time of human characters like Tom, Maddie, and others allows future Sonic the Hedgehog movies to delve deeper into the cosmic aspects of the franchise, I’d be all for it!
