As a die-hard Sonic fan who has been following this blue blur since the Sega Genesis days, I can’t help but get excited about the latest rumblings surrounding “Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.” While we only have a few scraps of information to go on right now, it feels like we’re standing at the starting line for what could be an epic kart racing adventure.
During The Game Awards event held on Thursday, Sega unveiled a new game titled Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, starring Sonic the Hedgehog along with his associates. Regrettably, the presentation provided minimal details about the game, merely showcasing a brief cinematic snippet featuring Shadow driving a race car. As such, eager fans will have to wait for further updates. However, some additional information has been disclosed by Sonic Stadium on X/Twitter. It seems that players will have the opportunity to compete in races spanning various terrains such as land, sea, air, outer space, and even beyond time itself. Furthermore, it appears that they can drift across different dimensions.
It’s wise to view this as unconfirmed until Sega makes an official announcement. After the The Game Awards reveal, there’s been speculation about “Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds” possibly incorporating content related to the Sonic movies due to the title sounding like a game that would blend characters and locations from both the video games and films. Given this hint, as well as the leaked metadata, it seems quite possible that we might see tracks set in Green Hills, Montana or racers such as Movie Sonic and Tom Wachowski in the game.
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that the metadata suggests a revisit to the gameplay style akin to ‘Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed’. This game stood out for its unique vehicle transformations into boats and planes, offering an engaging twist compared to typical kart racing games. Regrettably, this exciting feature was absent in ‘Team Sonic Racing’, but it seems we might witness its return in ‘Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds’. Given the positive reception ‘Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed’ received upon its 2012 launch, it’s heartening to see Sega revisit a beloved community favorite.
Currently, there’s no definite timeline for when we can anticipate the launch of Sonic Racing: CrossWorld. The trailer didn’t provide any hints regarding a potential release window or even a specific year. Interestingly, there’s also no store page for the game on platforms such as Steam and the Nintendo Switch eShop. Given that Sonic x Shadow Generations was released in October, it’s plausible we might be looking at a late 2025 launch. Historically, Sega has been known to release Sonic games during the holiday season, which is consistent with titles like Sonic Colors: Ultimate, Sonic Frontiers, and Sonic Superstars over the past three years. For now, fans will need to remain patient as we wait for Sega to disclose more details about the game!
