Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds to Feature Characters from Other Sega Universes!

Yesterday’s PlayStation State of Play event saw Sega unveil the initial gameplay trailer for “Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds“, a fresh addition to the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Ever since its announcement in December, fans have been on tenterhooks for more details about this upcoming title. Yesterday’s sneak peek was just the beginning, as Sega is gradually dishing out additional information. Although the trailer didn’t feature any characters beyond the Sonic franchise, Thalia Piedra from Sega of America hinted at the possibility of seeing other characters make an appearance in a recent PlayStation Blog post.

In the article, Piedra mentions that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is set to debut an exclusive gameplay feature where characters from both the Sonic and Sega franchises will be transported into different dimensions. This implies that more than just Sonic and his friends might show up in the game when it launches this year. Since the game’s main attraction is the inter-dimensional travel, it seems fitting that it could include tracks from other Sega games as well. However, since we haven’t seen any confirmation of non-Sonic racers yet, fans should keep their excitement in check until the developers provide more details.

2010 saw the release of “Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing,” a game that brought together characters from across different Sega franchises such as House of the Dead, Jet Set Radio, and Super Monkey Ball alongside the iconic blue blur, Sonic. The game received generally positive reviews, but in 2012, Sega enhanced the racing experience with “Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.” This version introduced transforming vehicles as a key feature (a concept that Sega is aiming to replicate in their upcoming game, “CrossWorlds”). It also significantly expanded the pool of racers. To this day, “Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed” stands out as the benchmark for Sonic racing games.

Sega has announced that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will boast the largest collection of characters ever seen in a Sonic racing game. So far, this lineup includes well-known characters such as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, and Amy, along with newer ones like Sage from Sonic Frontiers. Given that Sega views Like a Dragon and Persona as key pillars of their franchises, it’s possible we might see characters from these series too. However, fans are also hoping for less mainstream characters to make an appearance, such as those from Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, and Skies of Arcadia!

As a fan, I’m eagerly waiting for news on the release date of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. Historically, Sega has unveiled Sonic games during the fall release window, as was the case with Sonic x Shadow Generations last year. However, since a closed beta for the game is scheduled for next week, there’s a chance it could hit shelves much sooner than expected. If that happens, we might hear more about the roster in the near future. For now, all we can do is stay tuned for any upcoming announcements.
