As a longtime Sonic fan who grew up playing the games and collecting every piece of merchandise I could get my hands on, I can hardly contain my excitement for Sonic the Hedgehog 3! It’s like coming full circle to see director Jeff Fowler bring Shadow the Hedgehog to life after his early VFX days working on the character back in the day. It’s a testament to the enduring appeal of these beloved video game characters and the passion that drives creators to keep pushing forward.

Jeff Fowler, the director of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, paused a moment to ponder over Shadow’s journey from the video game world to the big screen. Yesterday, Paramount Pictures and Sega unveiled the trailer for the upcoming installment in the beloved video game series. On social media, Fowler reminisced about his early days in the visual effects industry, where he was responsible for creating Shadow the Hedgehog’s appearance and essence for fans all over the world in the video game of the same name. Now, he has the opportunity to replicate that work in bringing the big-screen debut of the character, voiced by Keanu Reeves, to life.

On Twitter, Fowler expressed, “In the Visual Effects industry, one of my early roles was animating an incredible character for his initial SEGA solo game. Now, two decades later, I can’t express enough PRIDE in being part of bringing SHADOW to life on the big screen for Sonic Movie 3.”

The fun with Sonic Adventure 2 doesn’t stop there. Writers Patrick Casey and Josh Miller, who are fond of this era of the Sonic franchise, have expressed their enthusiasm for incorporating Shadow into the storyline for the upcoming installment in the series. During a panel at Klamath Community College’s Comic-Con, Miller hinted that they would like to incorporate aspects from Sonic Adventure 2 and Shadow the Hedgehog, Shadow’s solo spinoff game, as Shadow seems set to be a significant part of the franchise moving forward.

With excitement growing, fans are preparing themselves for the highly anticipated release coming later this year. Yesterday, the “Knuckles” series on Paramount+ became a popular topic of discussion. (In a sense, it lays the groundwork for “Sonic the Hedgehog 3.”) Director Jeff Fowler suggested to DiscussingFilm that viewers might want to watch it to build anticipation for the sequel.

“Wow, it’s still quite early in terms of the Knuckles series, but one thing’s certain – people are going to adore this character. They’ll be smitten with Idris Elba portraying him and will clamor for more Knuckles. For now, our main goal is to spark excitement and encourage viewers to catch the sequel. Once that happens, we can consider expanding the series further. The potential for different storylines in this character is immense, and fans are sure to be thrilled by it all – hopefully, we’ll see more soon. But for now, I’m just bursting with anticipation for the sequel’s release.”
