As a seasoned gamer who’s been chasing after Sonic and Robotnik since the days of Sega Genesis, I can’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment that the deleted scene explaining Gerald Robotnik’s longevity didn’t make it into Sonic the Hedgehog 3. However, I understand the filmmakers’ decision to focus on the main narrative and keep the movie pacing smooth.
In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, actor Jim Carrey reprises his role as both Ivo Robotnik and his grandfather, Gerald Robotnik – a character from the Sega games who is usually only seen in flashbacks due to being deceased in the game’s timeline. However, in this movie, Gerald is alive, surprisingly for someone over a century old. Director Jeff Fowler shared that an original scene, removed from the final cut, would have clarified how Gerald manages to live so long within the film’s universe.
In simpler terms, fans might wonder how it’s plausible for the characters Shadow, Gerald, and Maria to have a story set in the 1970s and then reappear later on, as there are scenes suggesting that Shadow uses a quill similarly to how Robotnik uses Sonic’s quill. This unusual behavior is attributed to a mysterious energy source called chaos energy. According to Fowler, this energy not only keeps Shadow alive but also seems to slow down the passage of time for him, explaining his reappearance after such a long gap.
As a dedicated viewer, I must admit that there was a subtle detail left unexplored in the movie due to its overflowing narrative richness. A scene was shot featuring Gerald partaking in a clandestine smoke in prison, whereupon the deep wrinkles on his face miraculously smoothed out. This visual spectacle would have served to illustrate how Gerald’s time-frozen state came to be. However, with so many compelling characters and interwoven storylines, anything not integral to the movie’s pace and coherence had to be trimmed.
In the Sonic Cinematic Universe, Sonic’s quills have often been pivotal to the storyline. As Fowler notes, the initial two films feature Robotnik attempting to collect Sonic’s quills for powering his devices. Similarly, in the Knuckles series on Paramount+, a group strived to acquire Knuckles’ quills for their own weapons. Therefore, it is plausible that Shadow’s quills could have been instrumental in keeping Gerald alive throughout these years.
In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, it would’ve been great to witness that particular scene, but given Fowler and the team’s reasons for leaving it out, it makes sense. It’s hard to tell when exactly this scene was planned during production, but hopefully, fans will get a chance to view it at some point, perhaps with the upcoming Blu-ray release.
