Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Trailer Features Nods to Dragon Ball, Akira

As a lifelong fan of both Sonic the Hedgehog and anime, my heart skipped a beat when I saw the trailer for Sonic 3. The Akira reference with Shadow’s motorcycle slide had me doing a double-take! And let’s not forget about that upper kick that looked suspiciously like Vegeta’s from Dragon Ball Z. It seems our speedy blue friend has been spending some quality time watching anime in his downtime.

The highly anticipated sequel, “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” is fast approaching, and excitement among fans is palpable as they eagerly await what this new installment has in store. With Keanu Reeves joining the cast as Shadow the Hedgehog, it’s clear that this blockbuster will push boundaries and surpass anything that’s come before it. Today, this was confirmed as the first trailer for “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” was released, and keen-eyed fans quickly noticed a few anime-inspired easter eggs hidden within.

Didn’t catch them? No sweat. You can find out breakdown of the best nods below!

In the debut trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, we catch up with our speedy protagonist and his companions as they carry on their typical activities. However, nothing seems amiss until the arrival of Shadow. This enigmatic character makes a dramatic entrance at one point, riding in on a motorcycle – a move strikingly reminiscent of the motorcycle slide from Akira.

THE ANIME FAN WITHIN ME IS SCREAMING

As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t hide my excitement as Sonic the Hedgehog 3 becomes the latest project to draw inspiration from Akira’s iconic scenes. In this trailer, even Shadow seems to channel his inner Vegeta for a moment. A scene catches my eye where Shadow launches an upper kick high into the air, right towards Knuckles. Trust me, that’s got to sting!

If the kick appears reminiscent to you, it suggests that perhaps you are a follower of Dragon Ball series. In the Cell saga, Super Saiyan Vegeta executes this kick against Cell, a move now widely recognized as iconic. Given Shadow seems to have adopted this technique from Dragon Ball Z, we can’t predict what martial arts he has perfected. So, be prepared if you see him trying to strike Tails with a Rasengan!

Mark your calendars for December 20th, as Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is set to grace cinema screens soon! Meanwhile, the franchise is expanding with its own manga series, which we can thank Shadow for. Soon, you’ll find the first-ever Shadow the Hedgehog manga in CoroCoro Magazine. Additionally, Sonic x Shadow Generations will be available on consoles and PC starting from October.
