Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s New Trailer Features a Hilarious Pokemon Reference

As a long-time fan of both Sonic and Pokemon, this new trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has me absolutely thrilled! The crossover potential is immense, and I can hardly contain my excitement at the prospect of seeing these two iconic franchises finally sharing the big screen.

This morning, Paramount unveiled a fresh trailer for “Sonic the Hedgehog 3”. It offers a broader glimpse into what we previously saw from the film’s initial teaser. In the earlier trailer, it was disclosed that the Chao Garden feature from “Sonic Adventure 2” has been incorporated into the movies, serving as a themed eatery. It appears that Chao are imaginary creatures tailored for younger audiences in the Sonic Cinematic Universe, however, today’s trailer hints at another set of video game characters being fictional within this universe as well: Pokemon.

As the trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 commences, Knuckles displays a bewildered and underwhelmed reaction towards the Chao Garden restaurant. Given his character, this isn’t surprising since he appears to still be adjusting to life on Earth. However, things take an amusing turn when a couple of kids approach the table. One of them asks Tails if he is Detective Pikachu, which sets off laughter from Knuckles. The red echidna then remarks that Tails resembles a Pokemon, but Tails seems less than thrilled by the comparison. Tails gives Knuckles an indifferent glance as the echidna attempts to mimic Pikachu’s antics.

The reference to Detective Pikachu is quite amusing by itself, but becomes even funnier when you realize there’s a slight link between the two film series. Before March 2020, “Pokemon: Detective Pikachu” held the record for the highest-grossing video game adaptation ever. However, the first “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie managed to break that record shortly after its release. Although it’s likely a mere coincidence, the new Sonic film mentioning its character adds an interesting bond between these two franchises.

In the world of Sonic, Pokemon are known as a popular franchise, but they’ve shared screen time in certain video games. For instance, Sonic has battled alongside Pikachu, Jigglypuff, and Mewtwo in the Super Smash Bros. series. Transforming this fighting game into a feature film would be an enormous challenge, yet it’s an idea that has been contemplated. In fact, Jeff Fowler, director of Sonic the Hedgehog, has expressed interest in directing a Super Smash Bros. movie during a 2022 interview with ComicBook. However, Fowler hinted that bringing Mario and Sonic together might need some legal maneuvering first.

It’s yet unclear if Pikachu and Sonic will appear on the same movie screen, but given the popularity of shared cinematic worlds, it could indeed happen. In the meantime, Sonic enthusiasts can enjoy video game collaborations and occasional film cameos instead!
