Sonic the Hedgehog Fans Discover Long Lost Teaser for Cancelled Game

Back in 2010, Sega unveiled “Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I,” marking it as a direct follow-up to the classic Sonic games from the Genesis era, with similar side-scrolling gameplay. The initial intention was to produce three episodes in total, but only two were released; the second one came out in 2012. Unfortunately, plans for the third installment never materialized, and it wasn’t until 2017 that another 2D Sonic game, “Sonic Mania,” hit the shelves. Now, over a decade later, a previously unseen level from “Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II” has surfaced online.

A clip from an unseen game sequence apparently originated on a Macintosh computer once owned by Sega, shared by Obscure Gamers. In the video, there’s a sneak peek for what appears to be Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode III. At the end of Episode II, Sonic and Tails successfully disabled Robotnik’s new Death Egg. The initial plan for this footage seemed to involve showing the Death Egg restarting due to the Master Emerald. Interestingly, Knuckles is present in a deleted scene, hinting that he might have been tricked into working with Robotnik again. Unfortunately, Episode III was never released, so it’s unknown how this storyline would have unfolded. You can watch the video below.

It’s intriguing to catch a peek into what could have been in the world of Sonic! The unveiling of this discovery has garnered lots of positive buzz among fans, especially those who enjoyed the initial two episodes. In truth, during game development, there’s often a wealth of behind-the-scenes content that gets discarded. Usually, fans don’t get to witness such material. But with this scene now accessible online and viewable, it’s quite a significant event. This represents a piece of Sonic’s history, and that makes it exciting regardless of the eventual outcome.

Despite the long-standing dismay among fans due to the cancellation of “Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode III”, it seems that events have ultimately taken a positive turn. Originally, the first two episodes were developed by Dimps and Sonic Team, while the third was slated for creation by Christian Whitehead and Sega Studios Australia. However, Sega Studios Australia was closed down. Fast forward a few years, and Whitehead ended up developing “Sonic Mania” instead. This game is now highly regarded as one of the finest ever made featuring Sonic the Hedgehog.

Currently, the future of 2D Sonic games is uncertain. In the year 2023, Sonic Team and Arzest collaborated on Sonic Superstars, a 2D installment in the series that deviated from the classic pixel graphics featured in the original Genesis games and Sonic Mania. Sonic Superstars was not commercially successful for Sega, so it is yet to be determined what path the company will follow for the next 2D game in the series.
