Over the past few years, Sonic the Hedgehog has experienced a remarkable resurgence in his career, largely thanks to the box office success of the movies. This triumphant return has led to an influx of new merchandise for fans, ranging from popcorn containers to LEGO sets. Now, My Arcade is joining the trend and hinting at a forthcoming release that should excite enthusiasts of Sonic’s classic video games. On Instagram, My Arcade published a series of close-up images showcasing an arcade cabinet themed after Sonic the Hedgehog. As of now, we are unaware of the specific games it will contain, its release date, or its price.
It’s no secret that the cabinet’s emergence has sparked much discussion among Sonic enthusiasts! A segment of these fans are eagerly anticipating the release of a cabinet for the 1993 Japanese arcade game, SegaSonic the Hedgehog. However, it seems more probable that we’ll be greeted with an arcade cabinet showcasing some classic Sega Genesis games instead. For instance, My Arcade’s Mega Man Micro Player Pro offers the first six Mega Man games, while the Atari 50 Micro Player Pro console houses over a hundred retro titles. Considering this pattern, it’s reasonable to expect a Sonic cabinet that would showcase various older titles, with strong contenders being Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Sonic CD. It’s also plausible we might witness the inclusion of the 12 Game Gear games that were part of Sonic Origins Plus. Yet, until a formal announcement is made, all of this remains speculation.
– In contrast, the Micro Player Pro arcade cabinets typically retail for $39.99 each, whereas the Nano Player Pro models sell for $29.99. Generally speaking, the price difference is due to the size of the units, but it may also affect the games available. For example, the Atari 50 cabinet’s Nano Player Pro version offers approximately 25 fewer games than its Micro Player counterpart. This could result in noticeable differences if My Arcade produces two versions of the Sonic design. It is important to note that all these options are fully licensed products.
At first glance, an Arcade cabinet styled after Sonic appears appealing to many dedicated Sonic fans. Yet, it may not appeal to everyone. If you’re one of those who already possess a Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, or a gaming PC, there’s little reason to spend on a mini arcade cabinet for playing classic Sonic games; chances are, you can get Sonic Origins on these platforms at a lower price than the Arcade cabinet. However, for enthusiasts of retro gaming who might not own a current console, or passionate Sonic collectors, this could make an interesting acquisition.
At present, enthusiasts of Sonic are asked to be patient as they await a comprehensive update from My Arcade. Given the current surge of popularity for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, it’s possible that the company plans to capitalize on the character’s fame while he remains top-of-mind. Here’s hoping the final product will captivate both casual and dedicated Sonic enthusiasts!
