Over its third weekend, the movie “Sonic the Hedgehog 3″ earned $21.2 million at the North American box office, boosting its U.S. earnings to a total of $187.5 million. Worldwide, it has amassed $336.3 million. Although it was surpassed by Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” in the weekend box office rankings, this performance enabled the Sonic film series to surpass a significant global box office milestone. According to “The Hollywood Reporter,” the franchise has now collectively earned over $1 billion worldwide.
The sequel, “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” has already surpassed the global earnings ($319.7 million) of its 2020 predecessor, but it’s yet to catch up with the record-breaking $405.4 million set by “Sonic the Hedgehog 2.” Interestingly, while “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” overshadowed “Mufasa” during the pre-Christmas weekend, the latter has shown a remarkable recovery, currently sitting as the 10th highest-grossing film of 2024 with earnings totaling $476.4 million worldwide.
By the end of December, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was released and rapidly gained popularity during the holiday season. Its favorable reviews led to a substantial earnings at the box office. In fact, Paramount had so much faith in this film that they approved Sonic the Hedgehog 4 even before it debuted. As of now, Sonic 4 is slated for release sometime in 2027, continuing the hints dropped in the post-credits scenes of Sonic 3. For the most part, plot specifics are being kept secret, but Jim Carrey has expressed his willingness to return as Dr. Robotnik.
Despite Sonic the Hedgehog 3 still performing well in cinemas, it looks like viewers won’t have to wait much longer to watch it at home. The digital version is slated for release on January 21st, but details about when it will appear on Paramount+ or as a Blu-ray are yet to be announced.
It’s quite remarkable that the Sonic franchise has managed to earn over $1 billion, given its uncertain beginnings. At one point, it appeared as though the series might not survive, especially after the initial trailer for “Sonic the Hedgehog” was met with significant criticism due to the infamous “Ugly Sonic” design. However, the filmmakers wisely decided to redesign Sonic’s appearance to be more similar to his video game and animated TV series versions, which helped turn the tide. This adjustment played a crucial role in transforming Sonic into a profitable asset for Paramount. It seems unlikely that the franchise would have enjoyed such success if the initial design had remained; the first movie might not have been very appealing to audiences.
It’s no surprise that Sonic continues to thrive in the cinematic world. The writers of “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” have hinted at multiple sequels in the film series, as they believe the trilogy just scratched the surface of this property’s potential. There are many iconic characters from the games yet to make an appearance on the big screen, and it will be intriguing to witness how the creators handle these additions moving forward. The team appears to have a keen understanding of what makes for enjoyable, emotionally resonant stories, so we can likely expect more Sonic adventures in the future, unless something unexpected happens.
