Sony Confirms Intent to Purchase Kadokawa Corporation

As a long-time fan of both Sony and Japanese media, this potential acquisition news has me absolutely thrilled! The prospect of Sony, with its impressive track record in gaming and entertainment, joining forces with Kadokawa Corporation is a match made in heaven for anime enthusiasts like myself.

Based on recent speculations, Sony has indeed expressed its intention to purchase Kadokawa Corporation, as stated in an interview with Yahoo Japan. The company has asked for patience, stating, “We have made a preliminary statement of intent. We kindly ask for your understanding as we choose not to provide additional comments at this time.

Last month, Kadokawa expressed interest in acquiring something, but no final decision had been made at the time. The speculation started around the same period after an initial report by Reuters, suggesting that talks are still happening. Later on, Nikkei reported that the negotiations are still at their early stages, implying that a deal might not be reached soon.

For Sony, this acquisition holds great importance. It’s not just about strengthening its ties in the anime industry, as demonstrated by its Crunchyroll purchase, but also because it encompasses game developers like ACQUIRE and FromSoftware. The latter’s open-world Souls-like game, Elden Ring, has been incredibly successful with 25 million copies sold, and its expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, has moved a further five million units.

Since FromSoftware is engaged in numerous ventures spanning different game categories (with Elden Ring 2 not expected any time soon), it will be intriguing to follow the outcome of their talks with Kadokawa and Sony. Keep an eye out for further news as we wait.
