Sony Could Raise PS5 Prices Following Tariff Impact on Operating Income

It’s possible that Sony may raise the price of their consoles, as both Nintendo and Microsoft have increased the cost of accessories for the Switch 2 and Xbox hardware respectively, with an expected rise in the prices of first-party games from Microsoft to follow.

The latest financial data from the company projects an estimated operating income reduction of around $650 million, attributed to recent U.S. tariffs. In a webcast, the CFO, Lin Tao, mentioned they are contemplating transferring this cost to the price of their hardware products. [Source: Destin Legarie on Twitter]

Concerning manufacturing PS5 in the U.S., Hiroki Totoki, President and CEO, hinted that the possibility of such a shift is something they might need to explore in the future. However, it’s unclear when this might occur and how it could impact Sony’s overall business strategy.

As a gamer, I’ve noticed that the prices of gaming consoles sometimes go up, and it seems like the Sony PlayStation 5 is no exception. Last year, they increased the price in Japan, and just recently in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. Right now, the standard PS5 sells for $499.99, while the Pro version costs $699.99 in the US.

As of March 31st, 2025, a total of approximately 77.8 million PlayStation 5 consoles have been distributed globally. For further information, please visit this link.
