Approaching Christmas, Chris Barrett, formerly Bungie’s lead and director of Destiny 2 and Marathon, initiated a lawsuit against Sony Interactive Entertainment, seeking over $200 million. For the first time, Sony has officially responded, likely organizing their legal strategy privately, and they have countered aggressively.
According to Game File reports, the company overseeing PlayStation has responded with a series of messages, claiming they provide evidence of misconduct that led to Barret’s dismissal. Barret, lead at Bungie, contends that Sony’s investigation was a fabricated process intended to prevent him from receiving the substantial amount of money he is due following Bungie’s acquisition in 2022, after a long 25-year tenure at the studio, which he believes was dishonest.
In response to Barrett’s allegations, Sony has submitted a detailed 128-page document that point by point counters his claims, leaving no room for doubt about their seriousness. The supporting evidence, including the mentioned text messages, may initially appear questionable, but it is important to maintain neutrality and fairness in reporting. Notably, Barrett’s legal team asserts that Sony is selectively using certain text messages to support their argument. Here’s an example from Sony’s filing that reflects this claim:
In a similar manner, Barrett said to VICTIM 3, “I hope your boyfriend isn’t bothered by my frequent texts,” and “I’m just concerned. I really enjoy our conversations and texting. I don’t want him to misunderstand.” Later in the chat, when VICTIM 3 mentioned being busy, Barrett expressed, “I desire your attention, it’s frustrating.
At Game File, there’s a lot more information available. If you want a deeper dive, Stephen Totillo provides extensive details. We’ll continue to monitor the progress, potentially for months or even years ahead.
