Sony’s pace for transforming popular PlayStation exclusives into movies continues, with the recent announcement at CES revealing plans to produce films based on Helldivers 2 and Horizon Zero Dawn. The company has confirmed that these movies are in production, but no details have been shared about their potential release dates or the talent involved.
Moving forward, I’m thrilled to share that PlayStation Productions is collaborating with Sony Pictures for the creation of a film based on our highly acclaimed PlayStation game, Helldivers 2. This was announced by Asad Qizilbash during Sony’s CES 2025 conference. Immediately following this announcement, the Horizon Zero Dawn project was unveiled, with Sony describing the franchise as “one of our most promising intellectual properties brimming with opportunities to explore new avenues and genres.” It’s worth mentioning that one such expansion for Horizon took place in November of the previous year, when Guerilla Games and Studio Gobo launched a family-friendly spinoff of the open-world series titled LEGO Horizon Adventures.
When they’re released, these two movies will join the lineup of PlayStation films that Sony and its film subsidiary Columbia Pictures have already produced for the big screen. This includes “Uncharted” from 2022, “Grand Turismo” in 2023, both of which were hits, as well as an upcoming movie based on “Until Dawn,” set to premiere on April 25 this year, and a live-action “Ghost of Tsushima” film that’s coming soon. For television, Sony has already produced the highly successful series “The Last of Us” and “Twisted Metal,” and is currently developing a “God of War” TV series with Amazon and an “Ghost of Tsushima” anime with Crunchyroll.
It didn’t astonish me when I heard about a Horizon Zero Dawn announcement, given my belief that the narrative of tribal warrior Aloy, who hunts mechanical beasts in a post-apocalyptic world, was destined for the big screen. However, what did catch me off guard was the news of an adaptation for Helldivers 2. The sci-fi cooperative shooter series from Arrowhead Game Studios, which gained widespread popularity with the sequel’s recent explosive launch last year, doesn’t easily translate into a movie due to its emergent, player-driven live-service storyline that can’t be simply replicated on screen.
Additionally, the impressive display of weapons and tactics in Helldivers 2 could easily fit into an action movie directed by Michael Bay. It wouldn’t be surprising if the filmmakers crafted a satirical anti-fascist storyline similar to Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers, which is known to have influenced Helldivers significantly. In fact, Casper Van Dien, who played a role in Starship Troopers, expressed interest in a crossover last year.
Fun fact: I’ve got a tidbit here – Sony holds the rights to both Helldivers 2 and Starship Troopers! So, it’s quite possible that we might spot some amusing Easter eggs or nods to the iconic 1997 film in Helldivers 2’s upcoming movie. Maybe Michael Ironside Van Dien will even make an appearance as a character, but only time will reveal if this idea takes flight.
As a tech enthusiast and die-hard Helldivers 2 fan, I can hardly contain my anticipation for Sony’s grand unveiling of the game’s cinematic debut. On the other hand, while I eagerly await the Horizon Zero Dawn movie, it’s not a series that has traditionally resonated with me. Still, I’ll likely catch a glimpse, given my unexpected enjoyment of The Last of Us TV show, despite not being a big fan of the game itself.
Since its debut in February last year, Helldivers 2 has experienced more highs than lows (predominantly highs), but currently, it’s at an exceptionally high level. The eagerly anticipated Illuminate faction recently received a significant update during The Game Awards last month, and as someone who’s invested numerous hours battling the squid-like aliens since then, I can vouch that it delivers exactly what I was hoping for in terms of a new adversary for Super Earth. The release of this update significantly increased active players and catapulted the game’s sales ahead of Marvel Rivals and Path of Exile 2.
Helldivers 2 is a top-tier choice among both PC and PS5 games, especially if you enjoy cooperative shooters, high-octane sci-fi action, whacky physics humor, and satirical writing with a twist. Normally priced at $40, you can often find it cheaper by keeping an eye out for deals. Currently, the best deal is offered by CDKeys, where they’ve reduced the price by $10, letting you grab this explosive game for only $30.
