Sony PlayStation Drops PSN Account Requirements for Four Popular Games on PC

Recently, Sony’s enforcement of PlayStation Network (PSN) membership as a requirement for most new games from PlayStation Studios has sparked frustration within the gaming community. This means that gamers must create an account, sign up, and use it while playing the majority of newly released games on their PlayStation console.

This situation started back in May when Sony initiated a policy that demanded PlayStation Network (PSN) accounts for all new and existing Helldivers 2 players. This move sparked a commotion which eventually led Sony to reconsider their decision. However, Arrowhead Game Studios’ cooperative shooter no longer needed PSN accounts, but Sony soon started requesting them in newer ports like Ghost of Tsushima. Furthermore, they even restricted access to purchasing these games for regions where PSN is unavailable. Despite continuous complaints from PC gamers, the company has remained firm on this issue…until now.

On Wednesday, it was announced by Sony that four PlayStation games, including Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (releasing tomorrow on January 30), God of War Ragnarök, The Last of Us Part II Remastered (coming April 3, 2025), and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, will no longer necessitate PlayStation Network (PSN) accounts to be played. This means that these games should theoretically become accessible to players worldwide, though Sony may need to re-list them for sale in regions where users cannot sign up.

According to PlayStation’s senior vice president, Asad Qizilbash, an account for the PlayStation Network will no longer be required for certain games on PC. However, users who choose to sign in will still get extra perks such as earning trophies and managing friends.

Sony has reversed its stance on these specific games, as part of a larger discussion outlining perks for players who log in using their PlayStation Network (PSN) accounts. The advantages associated with each game upon signing in with PSN are detailed in the table that follows:

Sony chose to rescind its policy regarding these titles, as part of a broader discussion on benefits for those playing them via PSN. The rewards you’ll receive in each game by logging in with your PSN account are outlined in the table below:

It appears that Sony is now focusing on attracting PC gamers towards using PSN, rather than compelling them to do so. This strategy might have been more appropriate from the beginning to prevent backlash from the gaming community.

Specifically, the publisher is commencing its perks with these four games initially, with further additions expected for gamers down the line.

PlayStation Studios team members will persistently strive to offer additional perks to players who register for a PlayStation Network account, so keep tabs on studio updates for further details. A big thank you goes out to the global PlayStation PC community for their continuous support!

It’s wonderful to observe Sony modifying its PSN policy, and I’m eagerly anticipating the day when the company makes account sign-up an optional feature for other PlayStation games on PC as well. Hopefully, this change will spread throughout the entire PlayStation Studios library soon; games like Ghost of Tsushima and Until Dawn currently necessitate an account, which is preventing many players from accessing them. If you reside in a region where PSN is accessible and are comfortable using it, you might even receive some additional in-game rewards.
