In a recent earnings call, Sony’s president Hiroki Totoki announced that they aim to launch more family-friendly games in the future, following the remarkable success of their exclusive platformer, Astro Bot. The positive reception and sales performance of Astro Bot have influenced this decision to create similar titles going forward.
At The Game Awards 2024, our own game “Astro Bot” was victorious in four different categories, among them were Game of the Year and Best Family Game, making it the title with the highest number of wins, as reported by VideoGamesChronicle.
In addition to his praise, Totoki highlighted the achievements of Helldivers 2, such as being recognized as the Best Multiplayer Game and the Best Ongoing Game. It’s a type of game that Sony might consider releasing more versions of in the future.
He mentioned that “Helldivers 2,” a live-service game released a year ago, not only came out on top as Best Ongoing Game and Best Multiplayer Game but also, the recognition of such titles in genres we aim to expand, like family games and live-service games, is a significant step towards creating a diverse catalog of popular titles.
strengthening its acclaim even further was the fact that Astro Bot had one of the highest number of nominations during The Game Awards in December, along with other significant games such as Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Black Myth: Wu Kong.
The title saw impressive commercial success as well, managing to sell over 1.5 million copies within mere months of its launch on September 6th.
Ever since its debut, Team Asobi has consistently provided updates for Astro Bot at no cost, adding fresh stages to the game. In January, they revealed an entirely new level, which later served as the venue for the final round of a speedrunning tournament.
