Sony XDEV Says ‘Lots Riding on’ PS5 Livestream Today

Update [Wed 12th Feb 2025, 4:15pm]:

According to Sony XDEV director Jason Stewart, he just can’t help but share updates on social media regarding the upcoming “State of Play” event, suggesting that there’s a significant amount at stake for this particular presentation.

On X (or Twitter), he expressed: “Tonight is going to be an incredible evening, I’m filled with anticipation! It wouldn’t be truthful if I confessed I wasn’t feeling a bit jittery.

Based on their conversation, it seems there could be additional projects besides Death Stranding 2: On The Beach that Stewart and his team are working on. However, we might be overinterpreting the situation. In any case, we’ll know for certain within the next few hours.

Looks like I’m in for some exciting updates from Sony’s XDEV division during today’s State of Play livestream. I can hardly wait to see what they’ve got cooking up for gamers!

If you’re not aware, XDEV (formerly known as XDEV Europe) is a development team based in Britain that belongs entirely to Sony. This team assists external studios in publishing games under Sony’s first-party label. In earlier times, we might have referred to this as second-party, but the term has largely been replaced with more modern terminology.

Some projects it has been involved with, but doesn’t directly own, are games like last year’s Rise of the Ronin and Stellar Blade, which were developed by third-party teams and published by Sony. In the past, it has collaborated with studios such as Quantic Dream, Media Molecule (before they were acquired), and numerous others.

It appears that XDEV will make a significant impact during today’s State of Play event. Following the livestream’s announcement, they promptly shared news about it on their official social media platforms. Since then, XDEV director Jason Stewart has encouraged fans to “stay tuned”, while associate producer Carina Calvert hinted at “something exciting happening tomorrow”.

The game “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach” is under the supervision of XDEV, which suggests that it’s likely connected to Hideo Kojima’s upcoming sequel. However, Calvert’s online resume hints at an “unannounced project”, so there might be more exciting developments from the studio during the event.
