Update #1 [Wed 12th Feb 2025, 4:15pm]:
The Sony XDEV director, Jason Stewart, seems to be quite active on social media, frequently discussing the upcoming event called “State of Play“. He’s also dropped a few subtle hints suggesting that a great deal is at stake for this presentation.
On X (or Twitter), he posted: “Tonight is going to be a fantastic evening! I must confess, I’m feeling quite anxious.
Stewart’s team’s conversation hints that there could be additional projects beyond Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, though it might just be overthinking. Regardless, the truth will be revealed in a matter of hours.
It seems that Sony’s XDEV department will be providing significant updates during the live broadcast of the State of Play event today.
If you’re unfamiliar, XDEV (previously known as XDEV Europe) is a development team based in Britain that belongs entirely to Sony. Their role is to assist external studios in launching games under the Sony banner. In more traditional terms, we might have referred to this as a ‘second-party’ arrangement, but that term has largely been replaced with time.
Some projects this entity has been involved with are last year’s “Rise of the Ronin” and “Stellar Blade,” both games that Sony published and marketed, but were created by teams not under its ownership. Previously, it has collaborated with companies like Quantic Dream, Media Molecule (prior to acquisition), as well as numerous others.
It seems that XDEV will make a significant impact during today’s State of Play broadcast. Following the livestream’s announcement, they promptly shared information about it on their official social media platforms. Since then, XDEV director Jason Stewart has encouraged fans to “watch carefully,” while associate producer Carina Calvert hinted that “something exciting is happening tomorrow.
The game “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach” is under the supervision of XDEV, which suggests it could be a sequel by Hideo Kojima. However, Calvert’s online resume hints at her working on an unspecified project, implying that there might be more to come from the studio during the event.
