As a long-time PlayStation fan who has fondly remembered the days of my trusty PS1, I must admit that the limited-time PS5 theme wraps have left me feeling a bit confused and let down. The nostalgia factor is strong with these themes, but their temporary nature leaves me wondering if we’ll ever see the return of dynamic themes like those on the PS4.

You can now have the classic PS1 sounds and visuals with the limited-time PS5 theme wraps!

But Sony’s decision to have it limited in time has many fans perplexed and confused.

Does this mean that we are never going to get actual themes at this rate?

Limited Timed PS5 Theme Wraps

Initially, let me clarify that these aren’t dynamic themes but rather theme wrappers, resembling the styles from PlayStation 1, 2, 3, and 4.

With the latest PS5 update, gamers can personalize their initial screen display and sound effects to match those from the PS1, PS2, PS3, or PS4 consoles.

Sony has introduced an update enabling users to personalize their home screen’s audio and visual elements, but this isn’t like the engaging dynamic themes found on PS4. Instead, it offers a “theme wrap,” where the sounds you hear upon interface clicks can be customized, and a top layer from your selected era remains persistent.

Furthermore, what’s puzzling is that it’s only available for a short period. For some unknown reason, the limited-duration PS5 theme wraps aren’t permanent. This is surprising because even today, you can purchase a legacy PS2 dynamic theme for the PS4!

It seems that once it’s set up, you won’t be able to savor the theme wrappers anymore. Just wanted to say, thank you, Sony, in a roundabout way.

This move by Sony is causing many fans to express disappointment with their choice and their overall handling of themes. For those who don’t have a PlayStation 5 yet, it’s important to note that the console doesn’t come with customizable themes in the way the PS4 did upon release.

It’s been nearly 4 years now, yet we’re still receiving just static images as themes for the PS5, with the occasional exception of time-limited ones. When I initially got a PS4, there was a free dynamic theme for the PS1 available for download, and it was fantastic. However, it seems that the PS5 is only capable of supporting static, non-dynamic PS5 themes.

I find them appealing, it seems. You’re familiar with the iconic retro sounds of PlayStation 1, 2/3, right? And yes, there’s also the PlayStation 4, I suppose! Yet, I must say, even the PS4 sounds had a certain appeal. Pardon me if this seems trivial, but give it some thought.

You have a large market of people that are willing to buy dynamic themes, yet you have none!

Instead of boosting the hardware itself, adding a temporary PS5 theme doesn’t really drive sales. And let’s be clear, neither does dynamic theming. But what it does provide is an additional revenue stream for Sony. While I don’t have the exact numbers, I can tell you that the return on investment (ROI) for themes has been quite good.

With just a few noises and animated sequences created by one person, voila! It’s sold for a few dollars – easy as that!

I can’t find them anywhere, not even in the latest versions of their shows, which is quite disappointing. Reminiscing about the iconic themes from the PlayStation 2 and 4 era, I have to say, those were something else! And yet, they managed to deliver such high-quality themes on older hardware.

As a gamer myself, I’ve noticed that customizing the look of my gaming system is important to me. On my old 3DS, I was able to change the theme, but that feature isn’t available on the current Nintendo Switch. It seems like the big console companies have moved away from themes as a feature, making me wonder if they consider them obsolete?

If it turns out that the situation is as you described, it’s really disheartening. I think it would be appropriate for people to voice their opinions about the temporary PS5 theme covers directly to Sony.
