Sophie Morgan unsure Strictly would be “even playing field” for wheelchair user

As a fan and supporter of Sophie Morgan’s inspiring journey and advocacy for disability representation, I completely understand her reservations about participating in shows like Strictly Come Dancing as a wheelchair user. Her perspective is rooted in her lived experience and valid concerns regarding fairness and equal representation.

Sophie Morgan, a TV host and disability advocate, has expressed her doubt that Strictly Come Dancing provides a level competition ground for someone using a wheelchair.

In an exclusive interview with TopMob magazine for their latest issue, the host of Channel 4’s Fight to Fly shared his thoughts on the importance of inclusive representation in the hit dance show.

As a movie buff and someone who deeply cares about representation, I’m thrilled to see individuals like Rose, Ellie, and JJ Chalmers shining brightly on the silver screen. Their presence is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when we create opportunities and provide a platform for people with disabilities. It’s not just a one-time occurrence; it should be an industry norm.

She was asked about joining Strictly, to which she replied: “I might consider it. Dancing on the show isn’t daunting for me, but I wonder if it’s fair for someone in a wheelchair versus those who can use their legs freely?”

She added: “It’s unclear to me how one could impartially assess that contest. If a solution is found for this dilemma, then I would be in favor. Otherwise, it could appear insincere or symbolic rather than substantial.”

As a movie enthusiast, I’ve got to confess, there’s one show that truly piques my interest – “I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!” Yes, you heard it right. If given the chance, I’d be more than happy to jump on board and experience the thrills and challenges that come with it. So, consider this my official declaration!

Last year, there were rumors that Morgan was going to be on Strictly, but she clarified, “I’m not in a wheelchair.” (in simpler terms, “Rumors claimed I participated in Strictly last year, but I want to make it clear, I don’t use a wheelchair.”)

It came after The Sun reported the rumours under the headline “Cha Cha Chair”.

I was taken aback when I read “CHA, CHA, CHAIR…” on The Sun’s Twitter post, Morgan. That’s not an accurate portrayal of me. I want to clarify that I am a person who relies on a wheelchair for mobility, not a wheel itself. What in the world were you thinking? Let’s have a conversation about this, please. #NotAWheel #IAmAPerson

Sophie Morgan’s Fight to Fly airs Monday 22nd July at 9pm on Channel 4.
