Sorry My Hero Academia Fans, Deku and Bakugo Were Never Going to Be a Couple

As a seasoned gamer and avid manga reader with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that my expectations for romance in My Hero Academia were as high as Todoroki’s flames when he first ignited them. However, it seems that Kohei Horikoshi has left the romantic embers unkindled, much to the chagrin of many fans, myself included.

The popular manga series “My Hero Academia” is set to continue with an additional ending chapter, providing more insights into the series finale events. However, enthusiasts expecting a definite romantic development between Izuku Midoriya and Katsuki Bakugo may need to be patient, as such a development appears unlikely in the near future. The manga wrapped up its serialization in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine this Summer, which ignited intense discussions among fans regarding the series’ conclusion. These debates are still ongoing.

In the latest edition of “My Hero Academia,” you’ll find 31 fresh pages added to Volume 42. This volume hits Japanese bookstores on December 4th. Alongside corrections from series creator Kohei Horikoshi, it also features an extended epilogue chapter set after the final chapter of the series. However, it seems unlikely that the long-awaited romance between Deku and Bakugo will be included in this extra content.

My Hero Academia Doesn’t Have Romance at All, Really

If you’re looking for romantic elements in a series, “My Hero Academia” might not be the right choice for you. Despite Shueisha publishing numerous romance stories alongside it, this action series has consistently prioritized the development of its protagonist, Izuku Midoriya, and the heroic world around him over romantic subplots. The storyline is primarily centered on Deku’s ambition to become the greatest hero in the world.

In “My Hero Academia”, even though there were opportunities to explore other characters beyond Deku, the narrative was primarily focused on illustrating how the previous generation of heroes influenced the new crop of young fighters. Characters like Bakugo and Shoto Todoroki had their own extensive storylines spanning numerous chapters and eras, but these narratives always connected back to how they were shaping the future through their unique forms of heroism. Furthermore, any hints of romance were promptly set aside in favor of the characters’ heroic aspirations.

In the anime “My Hero Academia,” Ochaco Uraraka harbored a deep-seated affection for Izuku Midoriya, which she frequently hid due to the numerous challenges they faced. Their daily lives were anything but typical, and the imminent danger facing Japan often took precedence over personal matters like romance. However, when an opportunity presented itself for them to pursue a relationship, the series creator Kohei Horikoshi deliberately avoided depicting any romantic developments between Uraraka and Midoriya or any other main or supporting characters. Consequently, no romantic relationships were established within the show’s narrative.

Deku and Bakugo’s Relationship Is More Like Siblings

This is likely a much tougher point to get across, but Deku and Bakugo’s relationship dynamic never had a sense of romance in the traditional sense. Instead, it was something deeper. It’s a connection forged between two people who spent the majority of their lives and time together, and only wanted to impress one another. That’s not a romantic bond, that’s a classic rivalry. It was fairly heated between the two as Deku and Bakugo grew to really only care about how the other saw them, and that’s more of a sibling relationship than something that would be sought out in a romantic partner.

Deku and Bakugo often showed deep emotional vulnerability around each other, which suggested a trust that was scarcely visible with others. Their relationship dates back to before U.A. Academy, where their sibling-like rivalry has persisted into their hero careers. This rivalry, however, wasn’t rooted in genuine dislike; rather, it was Bakugo who had disdain for Deku due to feelings of inadequacy within himself. Conversely, Deku held Bakugo’s opinion in high regard because he yearned to impress his most formidable adversary.

The time they spent together and their mutual secret with All Might strengthened a profound brotherhood between them. This relationship is complex, marked by moments of sibling-like antagonism, but underpinned by an intense affection and regard. They’d go to any lengths for each other – Bakugo even risked his life for Deku, and vice versa. Their bond was forged in the heat of conflict, leading them to discover aspects of themselves within one another that they wouldn’t have otherwise encountered.

It’s possible that some fans may hope for a romantic relationship between these characters, but it seems unlikely according to the official storyline. In fact, romance is quite rare in “My Hero Academia,” and physical intimacy of any kind is almost never shown. Given the large number of characters and the complexity of the plot, it’s likely that at least one character will be left without a romantic resolution, as there simply isn’t enough room for everyone in the final chapters.

In the final episodes of My Hero Academia, there were numerous unanswered questions and complex relationships that needed attention. The conclusion didn’t seem to satisfy many viewers, prompting an additional finale in an attempt to address these concerns. It appears that the creators decided to maintain the existing dynamics between characters such as Deku and Bakugo, and most other potential relationships as well.
