South of Midnight Developers Did Not Want a “Chosen One” Narrative – Writer

Zaire Lanier, a writer at Compulsion Games, disclosed some insights concerning the main character of their upcoming action-adventure game, “South of Midnight.” During the Future Games Show Spring Showcase – Live from GDC (transcription via GamesRadar), Lanier mentioned that the narrative of Hazel, the protagonist of “South of Midnight,” will steer clear of the “chosen one” cliche.

Lanier describes Hazel as being in a peculiar transitional phase, hovering between childhood and adulthood. He further clarifies that Hazel is an ordinary child, primarily concerned with locating her mother, and not some extraordinary superhero figure.

As a gamer, I totally agree with Lanier’s perspective on the game’s narrative. Instead of having a “chosen one” protagonist, the concept that “anyone can become a Weaver, it’s something the land decides for you in your hour of desperation,” feels more authentic and engaging. So when Hazel is desperately chasing after her mom’s trailer during the hurricane, it makes perfect sense that she was chosen by the land to be a Weaver. This idea adds depth to the story and creates a sense of mystery and wonder, making the gameplay experience more immersive.

Lanier described it as if she occasionally blinks, revealing threads in the sky, akin to seeing the intricate design of the universe we refer to as the grand tapestry. These weavers possess the ability to manipulate these threads for diverse magical spells. Their primary objective is to alleviate and eliminate stigma in regions marred by unfortunate events.

[Weavers] have the ability to truly understand your past traumas. They don’t solve them for you, as only you can heal yourself, but they offer a listening ear, empathize with your experiences, and witness your memories. I believe this understanding and empathy is often exactly what you require.

I’m thrilled to share that “South of Midnight” is set to grace PCs and Xbox Series X/S on April 8! Earlier today, the studio proudly announced that it has hit the gold milestone. Essentially, this means that the main development work on “South of Midnight” has been wrapped up, and a version of the game, ready for its console launch, has been sent to platform owners for all the necessary certification processes.

Although most of the main development for South of Midnight may have been completed, it’s probable that the studio is continuing to work on the game quietly. These hidden efforts will be unveiled as day one updates and subsequent post-release patches, intended to address any significant issues that might have slipped through the Quality Assurance (QA) process.

Gamers eager to experience ‘South of Midnight’ can review the hardware specifications that were disclosed in January. The game’s system requirements appear quite manageable. For a smooth gaming experience, it’s suggested to have either an Intel i5-7600K or an AMD Ryzen 5 1600X CPU, along with any of the following graphics cards: Nvidia GeForce GTX 2060, Intel Arc A580, or AMD Radeon RX 6600. A minimum of 16 GB RAM is also necessary.

If you’re eager to play South of Midnight ahead of its launch, consider pre-ordering the Premium Edition. This exclusive version grants you five days of early access, in addition to the game’s soundtrack, a digital art book, and a digital comic book.
