Spawn: Creator Todd McFarlane and Blumhouse Tease New Movie Is King Spawn

As a long-time fan of Todd McFarlane and his iconic anti-hero Spawn, I’m beyond excited about the latest development in the upcoming movie titled “King Spawn.” The announcement that the script is finally finished is music to my ears, as it brings us one step closer to seeing this dark and complex character come to life on the big screen once again.

Todd McFarlane’s anticipated Spawn movie, long-awaited by fans, will reportedly be named “King Spawn.” This title update was shared by the comic book icon himself via social media recently. The announcement comes accompanied by a script cover, implying that the script has been finalized and filming could begin soon. Given that this revelation occurred during Comic Con week, it’s likely McFarlane or Blumhouse Productions have more news to share this week. Last year, Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions mentioned his intention to release the movie in theaters by 2025. If production starts promptly and with a budget and timeline that allows for a swift shoot, it’s plausible that goal could still be met.

In one of the Spawn spinoff series introduced following Todd McFarlane’s groundbreaking 300th issue of Spawn in 2019, the tale unfolds with Spawn being urged to claim the throne of Hell as one of history’s most perilous beings manages to break free from the underworld.

As an assistant to a game developer named Blum, I’d put it this way: “I’m thrilled to share that the project is progressing rapidly. The challenge lies with my colleagues in writing and production to resolve their disagements and get back to creating. Fortunately, we have an incredible team working on it. Based on our current pace, I believe we might even release a Spawn movie as early as 2025. Keep your fingers crossed!”

In 1997, Warner Bros., under its New Line Cinema label, produced a film based on “Spawn.” Despite earning approximately twice its production cost at the box office, with $88 million, the movie received lackluster reviews from both critics and audiences. Around 2016, Todd McFarlane began discussing plans for a new “Spawn” film in detail, revealing an A-list actor on board (later identified as Jamie Foxx). The upcoming production will veer towards R-rated horror, rather than following the superhero genre path of the initial adaptation.

McFartlane has expressed his intention to direct “King Spawn” for close to ten years now. It’s uncertain if he will continue to helm the project or bring on a new partner when production starts in earnest. Fingers crossed, we’ll learn more about this film at SDCC coming up soon!
