Speak No Evil Director Addresses Making Changes for Reboot

As a seasoned horror enthusiast with a knack for spotting hidden gems, I can confidently say that “Speak No Evil” has piqued my interest. Having had the misfortune of experiencing more than one bleak horror movie in my lifetime, I’m intrigued by James Watkins’ promise of a “fun” twist on this concept. It’s not often you get to enjoy a psychological nightmare that leaves you both rinsed and amused!

In 2022, the Danish horror film titled “Gaesterne” debuted, and shortly after its premiere, discussions started between Blumhouse Productions and filmmaker Christian Tafdrup about remaking his movie. James Watkins was chosen to direct the American adaptation named “Speak No Evil“. Although there are shared themes in both films, Watkins affirmed that the alterations from the original source material are not random but rather stem from differing cultural viewpoints. The remake is scheduled to hit cinemas on September 13th.

In response to the question about why he didn’t remake the original movie, Watkins stated to SFX magazine (as reported by GamesRadar), “There will be some who might ask, ‘Why hasn’t he updated that film with a more intense, non-stop ending?'” However, Watkins contends, “I am focusing on the characters and their development, particularly their agency and reactions. I have drawn inspiration from Christian’s film for its satire, social commentary, and the way it provokes our own responses.”

As a gamer diving into this original flick, I can’t deny it’s a horror movie through and through. Yet, for some viewers, it’s an unsettlingly bleak journey that seems more like a somber drama than a fright fest. However, director Watkins clarified that while his interpretation of the concept remains horror-centric, there’s a touch of fun woven into it compared to the Danish film.

The filmmaker admitted, “I’ve previously created a very gloomy movie, so I didn’t feel compelled to make another one like it. Instead, you can create a thrilling, tension-filled experience that offers thought-provoking themes and conversation starters – all while being enjoyable.”

He added, “People need ‘fun’… Fun in inverted commas. I’ve sat with audiences and people come out of this absolutely rinsed, like you would on a great roller coaster ride … I wanted to make a film that is tense and has people screaming at the screen.”

Spending a weekend at the picturesque English countryside home of a friendly British family they met on vacation turns into a horrifying psychological ordeal for an American family. This suspenseful thriller, hailing from Blumhouse Productions known for movies like “The Black Phone,” “Get Out,” and “The Invisible Man,” delves into the dark side of modern society. James McAvoy, winner of a BAFTA award (“Split,” “Glass”), offers a gripping portrayal as the captivating estate owner, whose seemingly unbounded hospitality hides an unfathomable evil.

Speak No Evil is set to land in theaters on September 13th.
