As a cinephile with a penchant for edge-of-your-seat thrillers and masterful storytelling, I eagerly anticipate the release of James Watkins’ remake of Speak No Evil tomorrow. Having had the privilege of witnessing the original Danish film, I can attest to its chilling impact, yet I am intrigued by Watkins’ commitment to breathe new life into this gripping narrative.
On the following day, filmmaker James Watkins brings “Speak No Evil” to cinemas, which is a new take on the Danish thriller by Christian Tafdrup. This is an exceptionally quick production – the original was released in 2022, and yet, the remake featuring James McAvoy has already been completed. However, Watkins aimed for more than just a duplicate version; given the widespread praise the original received both at home and abroad, it caught Hollywood’s attention almost as quickly as “Snowpiercer” or “Parasite.” Nonetheless, Watkins recognized the strong foundation of the project and saw an opportunity in remaking it.
At that moment, he needed to find a way to personalize it and offer something unique, as simply watching the Tafdrup version with English subtitles wouldn’t suffice for his audience.
When discussing storytelling with ComicBook, Watkins expressed that he evaluates stories based on their quality, and in terms of adaptation, there’s no need to remake a film. He mentioned that Christian’s movie was recent, and it was excellent. So, the question became for him: Can I create something unique? Can I offer a fresh perspective? This wasn’t a skeptical process; he had turned down adaptations before, but this one resonated with him. He believed it would connect with others as well. By setting the story in the UK and making it culturally relevant to his world and that of the people he knows, Watkins felt the project’s DNA would be altered enough for both films to engage in an intriguing dialogue with each other.
In a delightful twist, spending a weekend at the picturesque English manor of a friendly British family met on vacation for what seems like a perfect getaway, rapidly spirals into a chilling psychological labyrinth. Hailing from Blumhouse Productions, creators of The Black Phone, Get Out, and The Invisible Man, comes an edge-of-your-seat suspenseful thriller tailored for today’s era. BAFTA award-winning James McAvoy (Split, Glass) delivers a captivating portrayal as the charismatic, dominant estate owner whose seemingly endless generosity hides an abyss of darkness.
Speak No Evil arrives in theaters tomorrow.
