As a horror enthusiast with a soft spot for well-crafted suspense and psychological thrillers, I must say that Speak No Evil has left me thoroughly captivated. Having grown up watching classics like Eden Lake and The Woman in Black, it was a joy to see director James Watkins return to form with this riveting remake.
The latest movie from director James Watkins, famous for his British horror films “Eden Lake” and “The Woman in Black,” is titled “Speak No Evil.” In this film, Watkins aims to deliver a chilling slow-burn horror-thriller, where an initially harmless and ordinary scenario gradually unravels to reveal something far more sinister and terrifying beneath. The director effectively achieves this objective by staying true to the essence of the original 2022 Danish film while also giving it a uniquely American twist. This adaptation not only aligns with the story’s underlying themes but also leaves room for personal interpretation, allowing each viewer to derive their own insights from the movie.
The narrative of “Speak No Evil” revolves around Ben and Louise Dalton, portrayed by Scoot McNairy and Mackenzie Davis, along with their daughter Agnes (Alix West Lefler). This family resides in London and decides to embark on a vacation in Italy. There, they encounter the vivacious and spontaneous family of Paddy (James McAvoy), Ciara (Aisling Franciosi), and their son Ant (Dan Hough). The Dalton family, who are usually reserved, find themselves drawn to these new acquaintances. The phrase “opposites attract” seems fitting in this scenario.
As James Watkins, I’m proud to say that I’ve managed to carve out fresh terrain for this remake of Speak No Evil. What sets the best horror tales apart is their ability to transform ordinary life moments into chilling nightmares, and I’ve taken this concept to a whole new level. This movie will make you squirm in your seat as it delves deep into the uncomfortable situations that every couple has faced – awkward outings, trips, or playdates with another couple. In essence, Speak No Evil is a haunting reminder of the trials and tribulations that come with being in a relationship.
In this adaptation, the main characters are depicted as Americans, and their American mannerisms and habits provide an intriguing contrast to Paddy and Ciara from the UK. The narrative, expertly guided by Watkins, unfolds from initial cordiality and camaraderie to uncomfortable tension and civil discord, culminating in a breakdown of politeness – even leading to a violent outburst as a consequence. The first act is filled with clever wit and humor, thanks to its dramatic irony. The second act skillfully navigates the delicate balance of keeping the audience hooked on a drama that intensifies uncomfortably during a vacation. However, the final act strains under the weight of some questionable character decisions and plot devices, but manages to deliver an exciting climax nonetheless.
The movie “Speak No Evil” thrives on the strong dynamics of its cast. James McAvoy is mesmerizing in every scene he appears, with an unnerving charm. His character, Paddy, and Aisling Franciosi’s Ciara form a captivating duo reminiscent of the Joker and Harley Quinn. The intricate power struggle between Paddy and Mackenzie Davis’ Louise, as well as the developing camaraderie between McAvoy’s Paddy and Scoot McNairy’s Ben, offers a compelling exploration of masculinity (or its absence).
Despite some cringe-worthy instances of plot manipulation, it’s challenging to recall another horror-thriller movie that has been so skillfully made and boasts such compelling acting as “Speak No Evil.” It serves as yet another proof of James McAvoy’s extraordinary ability to craft unsettling characters (as demonstrated in “Split”), and solidifies the notion that James Watkins might have discovered his niche within horror filmmaking.
