As a longtime fan of Spider-Man, I can’t help but get excited about the potential roster of villains for our friendly neighborhood hero in the upcoming Spider-Man 4. The rumors swirling around Kingpin’s role have me all worked up, as Vincent D’Onofrio’s portrayal of the character is nothing short of iconic. I can just imagine the two acting heavyweights sharing the screen, their powerful performances creating a gritty, street-level narrative that would perfectly ground this chapter in Peter Parker’s life.
Following several years filled with work (and a generous dose of speculation), it appears Sony’s Spider-Man 4 is preparing for takeoff at last. This fall, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton joined the team, while franchise lead Tom Holland recently expressed his enthusiasm about the project’s current direction.
Holland expressed that while the script for Spider-Man 4 still requires some refinement, he commends the writers’ efforts, stating, “It sparked excitement within me! About three weeks ago, I read it, and afterward, Zendaya and I couldn’t help but jump around our living room as we read it together.
Certainly, there are still numerous mysteries shrouding the upcoming movie, Spider-Man 4. One key question remains: who might be the adversary that Peter Parker faces during the film’s main conflict? Let us explore some of our leading speculations regarding the potential antagonist in Spider-Man 4.
Scorpion
So far, the Spider-Man films featuring Holland have been around for nearly a decade, and they’ve certainly left some questions hanging. One of these lingering questions concerns Mac Gargan/Scorpion (played by Michael Mando), a villain whose transformation into a full-fledged supervillain with an armored, reptilian suit was hinted at in the post-credits scene of 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming.
After all this time, we’re still no nearer to witnessing the continuation of Scorpion’s tale or Mando reprising his character. Given that most people aren’t familiar with Scorpion in a live-action setting, he could be an ideal and fulfilling choice for a fight scene in Spider-Man 4. At the very least, it would provide closure.
Black Cat
In the live-action versions of Spider-Man, aside from Felicity Jones’ brief appearance in plain clothes in 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the character of Felicia Hardy, also known as Black Cat, has gained significant popularity among fans. She is a skilled thief who harbors an unusual affection for both Peter and Spider-Man. Over time, her role has shifted between hero, antihero, and outright villain, but regardless of her alignment, audiences find themselves drawn to her charm.
As a die-hard movie buff, I can’t help but speculate about the potential direction for Spider-Man 4. Instead of just focusing on the web-slinging adventures outside the suit, this installment could delve deeper into Peter Parker’s personal growth, both within and beyond his iconic costume. To further complicate his tragic love story with MJ, introducing the enigmatic Black Cat seems like an inspired choice.
Silver Sable
Silvija Sablinova, commonly known as Silver Sable, has various roles such as a solo protagonist, head of the Wild Pack, and a romantic interest for other Marvel characters. She is renowned and beloved by many fans. As a skilled bounty hunter with a tragic past involving her father who was a Nazi hunter, Sable can be presented as an ally to Peter Parker from Holland or perhaps an opponent of some sort within the government, much like how she has been portrayed in recent Spider-Man video game series.
If the proposed cross-over film featuring Silver Sable and Black Cat, titled “Silver and Black,” is no longer going to happen, it’s essential we get to see Silver Sable portrayed in live-action somehow – and Spider-Man 4 might offer an unanticipated opportunity for that.
Mister Negative
In addition to Spider-Man games, another character who has gained prominence among fans is Martin Lei, also known as Mister Negative. Originally a gangster turned philanthropist with connections across New York City (including the F.E.A.S.T. Project where Aunt May volunteers in the comics), Martin was clandestinely subjected to experiments by crime boss Silvermane. This resulted in him having dominion over both Darkforce and Lightforce dimensions under a hidden identity, as well as the power to morph his appearance into a reversed negative form.
Mister Negative’s design is without question breathtaking, transcending the limitations of mere static art in games where he appears. His unique and sorrowful backstory, along with his street-level ties, make him a formidable adversary for Peter to confront, whether as Spider-Man or in his civilian identity.
Kingpin
It’s only fitting that a discussion about street-level adversaries for Spider-Man would be incomplete without mentioning Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin, portrayed by Vincent D’Onofrio. Although he is often linked to his feud with Daredevil, Kingpin has been a significant figure in many memorable Spider-Man comic book stories. Ever since D’Onofrio took on the role, there’s been an anticipation for these two characters to interact.
According to ongoing speculation, it’s uncertain whether the street-level climax of Kingpin’s rise in New York will appear in Spider-Man 4. However, if it does, it would be quite exciting as it could provide a solid foundation for Peter Parker’s next storyline and bring together two well-loved actors on screen.
Venom
As a die-hard film enthusiast, I can’t help but speculate about the possible directions for Spider-Man 4. With Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars on either side of it, it seems intriguing to consider if this movie could delve into a multiverse narrative. If that’s true, and considering the outcome of Venom: The Last Dance, it would be thrilling to witness Tom Holland’s Spider-Man officially team up with Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock in his Venom persona.
Although there have been some complex post-credit sequences, Tom Hardy’s beloved depiction of Venom hasn’t fully interacted with the broader Spider-Verse as of yet. This engagement could offer fans a contemporary movie adaptation of the famous comic rivalry between these characters, while also generating an intriguing dynamic due to their distinct personalities.
Knull
Expanding further, it’s officially confirmed that “The Last Dance” will feature Knull, the ancient King of the Black who governs symbiotes throughout the cosmos. Those associated with the film hint that Knull’s tale may not be confined to a solitary project, fueling discussions about his potential role in “Spider-Man 4.
Instead of rehashing the events similar to those portrayed in “The Last Dance“, introducing a significant conflict for character “Holland’s Peter” could prove intriguing, providing an opportunity for character development and narrative depth.
Doctor Doom
In conclusion, if Spider-Man 4 aligns with the plot of Doomsday and Secret Wars, there’s a chance that Robert Downey Jr.’s character, Victor Von Doom/Doctor Doom, could make an appearance. This unexpected confrontation for Peter Parker would hold additional weight due to his past relationship with Tony Stark/Iron Man, who is now deceased.
It so happens that Spider-Man will be receiving a fresh suit from Doctor Doom in an upcoming Marvel comic book; however, it remains to be seen if this change will manifest in the upcoming movie adaptations.
